HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL.
Tho ordinary meeting of the Lower Hurt Borough Council was held last evening, and was attended by:' The Mayor, Mr. E. }'. Bunny, and Councillors Hotbs, Ball, Oleiidon, Keuipthorne, and Knight. -, Mr. T. M. Wilford wrote stating that the matter of appointing' an independent trustee' of tho council's sinking funds would be included (by arrangement with tho Prime Minister) in tho Bill to go. before the House—Received., The Wellington City Council intimatec that they had resolved-to request th« Government to repeal Section 23 of. the Local Bodies' Loans Amendment . Act, 1908, which provides that no person, othei than tho Public Trusteo shall he appointed as a" sinking fund commissioner "of loans raised under the: .principal Act. They invited the co-operation of tho Hutt Council iu (he same direction. i. In connection with this matter, "tho Mayor and Councillor Kempthbrue reported adversely, pointing out that tho funds were sater in tho hands of tho Public Trustee. The report was agreed to, and it was decided to forward a copy to tho City Council (and Mr. Wili'ord, Commissioner Short advised that the •inquiry regarding tho allocation of costs of tho Hutt Road would take place on Monday, 30th instant.—The solicitor was instructed to tako the necessary steps.' Tho Gracefield Company, Ltd., wroto staling that they contemplated dedicating the land necessary for a road 'between tho Waiwetu pipe bridge and the Lowry Road, such dedication to bo made on a parallel with tho existing pipe line, and the reserve of 16ft. Gin. to form part of tho chain road. Tho company also asked for information in regard to tho council s requirements. After some discussion, tho Mayor moved that the company be informed that at present there appeared to be difficulties in accepting the road, owing to tho water pipes running across it, but in the meantime tho engineer would report on tho matter.—Carried. ' ' Mr. M'llvride applied to have lus'liouM on the Willoughby Knight Estate connected with tho sewerage. Applicant mado reference to the bond entered into by tho Knight Estate—Referred to .Works Comniittee for report. . . Two - applications for assistance • to drainage were granted.- . . Messrs. Chapman, Skerrett, and, Wylio forwarded a cheque in of advance made.to a.ratepayer... 1 hey further asked that tho caveat,-in,so.far as it related to certain matters, ■ might bo withdrawn.—Received. Reporting on, several cases of diptneria in tho borough, Dr. Purdy, slated that there whs no cause for alarm, and nothing approaching an epidemic. . • , , • The engineer reported that, acting on instructions from tho couuoil, Section' j, of'the-eastern drainage, had been discontinued. Tho total costwas Xllib os. id. Tho balauco of the section would bo done probable under the estimate. Tno.old cemetery fence and memorial work hail now been'completed. The recent storm had damaged certain parts of the borough, Creeks liad overflowed, but gangs of men had been put on.and repairs wero being effected. Two connections had beeni mado with tho gas mains, and threo With tho water mains last month. Tho contnfumil pump was now in proper working order and doing excellent work. , Councillor Ball moved: "That the resolution carried by tho council at. last meeting regarding <m for a refund of rates bo rescinded, and that the amount over-paid (JS.m Od.)
