BIG COURT CASE. SALVAGE ON STAR OP CANADA. Gisborne, September it. It is expected that tho Star of Canada case, a claim by (ho Tyser Lino and Captain Hart for n refund of .£5821 out of the total (.£S3G3) paid to the Gisborne'Shcopfarmers' Company for salvage charges, will be concluded this afternoon. A great deal of evidence- has been taken. The enso is now in its fifth day; there havo also been night sittings. Tho plaintiffs' evidence goes to show that the charges were too high, while itho defence sets up that tho charges were justified by the difficulties, risks, and expenses entailed. Lalci. Evidence in the Star of Canada claim ! was concluded this evening, Mr. Justice Chapman reserving his decision. 'Sir John finality (solicitor for plaintiffs) intimated that, legal argument would be heard in Wellington. MR. HALLEY'S ESCAPE. Hokitika, September 24. A motor accident occurred on the Kaneiri Road this afternoon. Mr. J. A. Nalder, registrar of tho Supreme Court and Mr. P. Halley, conciliation commissioner, and his wife were being driven out to the lake. When ascending a steep incline the motor was met by a trap and, although the driver of tho trap pulled aside, the wheels of the motor skidded and capsized over a small embankment. The party were thrown out and the car was considerably knocked about, and tho driver slightly injured. Tho passengers escaped unhurt. "RAGGING" IN LOCO. SHED. Christchurch, .September 24. Some years' ago piibli6 attention was drrected'to "ragging" at the railway en-gine-sheds. That custom still continues, as is shown by tho prosecution of six youths on a charge of assaulting a fellow employee. The evidence showed that complainant had declined to submit to the "initiation" ceremony, and was subjected to indignities. Accused wero fined and severely cautioned. The police stated that tho' prosecution was the result of a request from the Railway Department, which was anxious to stop tho practices. CLERGYMAN KILCED. Gisborne, September 24. - Tho Rev. Nikora Tautau, on his way to Tolaga after holding a service at T'okomaru yesterday, fell from his horse. Ho was picked up unconscious, and died last uight. . ■
