THE FRUIT INDUSTRY.
EXPERIMENT ORCHARD AT BUNNY THORPE.
The Department of. Agriculture is establishing an experiment, orchard at Bunnythorpe, where an aero of land has been set apart by one of the fruit-growers in the neighbourhood, the Department planting the ground with 108 trees from its nursery stock. These comprise 100 apple and eight pear trees, and it is intended by observation and experiment to ascertain which of tho varieties are most suited 'to tho general growing conditions of tho district. Thero will bo about 60 varieties of apples (not more than two of a kind) to chooso from, while the pears are all distinct sorts. Tho term tit the experiments is seven years, .and the instructor will bold annual demonstrations of pruning, besides conducting spraying Operations when required,- and giving advice ■ generally. Tho Government will provide the fertilisers, and the owner is to supply tho necessai- manual assistance for spraying and -'i' work. .. . The tests are to be urn; the supervision of Mr. G. Stratford, th.>..rict orchard instructor.
