BOYS' INSTITUTE.
The speaker at the sorvice for boys at Hie Boys' Institute yesterday evening was the Hon. C. M. Luke, M.L.C. His subject was "Personal Responsibility," and > lie based his remarks on the. parable of the Good Samaritan. After explaining the parable in a picturesque way, the speaker went on to'apply its teaching to the present highly organised state of society. Ho referred to gambling, .intemperance, and otilier evils of modern life, as constituting the perils by the way which surround the paths of most lives, and indicated that it was the! duty of every true boy and man to play the chivalrous part and to help to raise the boy or man who had fallen. So only by living no); for himself but for the service of others would each' boy and man find that life wtis worth living. No one could escape making the choice between a life of selfishness and a life of service, and the speaker appealed to each one present to use Jiis time, his talents, and his political privileges in helping to niako this world more and nioro an expression of the thought of Jesus Christ for it. The address, which wns graphically illustrated, was listened to with attention, and the hearty thanks of tho meeting wore extended to Mr. Luke. During the evening occasion was taken to present Mr. F. C. Atkinson, one of tho honorary instructors, who has been transferred'to Christohurch, with a. volume of Shakespeare's complete works as im indication o? the esteem in which ho is held bv the institute boys.
