NOTICE TO MAHINBEB. Auckland Harbour: Beacon off Orake! Wharf.—The Auckland Harbour Board have notified that a large black 'beacon, the top being 15ft. Bin. above high-water mark, has been erected at the end of the outfall sewer, Orakei Point, bearing N. 384 dog. E. (magnetic), or N. 53Jdeg. E. (true) from the eastern end of Orakei Wharf, distant 880 ft. Mariners and others are warned to keep clear of the beacon. Charts, etc., affected: Admiralty Chart No. 1970: "Now Zealand Pilot," eighth edition, 1908. Chapter ii, page 38. A NEW AKEIVAL. The steamer Kauri (ex Harmony), recently purchased by the Union Steam Ship Company, arrived at Port Chalmers on Wodnesday morning for tho first time, and brought a load of ooal and hardwood from Newcastle. In appearance the vessel is bluff-bowed, with an almost perpendicular 'funnel amidships, and well decks fore and aft, the only unique feature about her being tho waterways on either side of tho bridge deck, and these are situated outside the iron bulwarks. She was built in Hartlcpool for J. and C. Harrison in 1905, and her dimensions are:—Length, 325.1 ft.; breadth, 47ft.; depth. 22.3 ft.; gross tonnage, 2833;. net tonnage, 1829. Captain C. Sauter brought her to headcmartera, and his officers arc Mr. A. 8.Pays (chief). Mr. W. A. Grey (second), Mr. O. C. Bullock (third*, Mr. G. Bradley (chief engineer), Mr. T. Cribbs (fecond), Mr. W. S. Smart (third), and Mr. J. Hunter (fourth).

Oreymouth reported that tho weather a-t that port was bad yesterday. Thorp \vaa a "fresh" in tho river, and a considerable ppa on the bar. It was blowing n. bard northerly gale, in consequence of which thero were no shipping movements at the port. The Flora, Awahou, and Kowhni wore OHisiilo waiting a favourable opportunity to cnler.
"Itar dangerous" was the report received from Westport yesterday. There■ was also a, heavy "fresh" in the river. It was stated that shipping movements were very doubtful yesterday, and also that tho Raknnoa.wns outside tho bar.
The largo four-masted German barque Adolf Vinnen left Newcastle a few days ago with 5563 tons of coal on board, bound for Valparaiso. This is the largest cargo taken from the port for over a year by any sailing vessel, and is r.ot likely to bo exceeded for some time to come.
Pakeha, s.s., which left. London on August 21, is due at Sydney about October 5, with 1000 emigrants. She will subsequently come on to Auckland and Wellington.
Wireless advice received from the Hauroto last evening stated that she was expected to arrive at Auckland from the South Sea Islands on Monday.
The Government steamer Hinemoa arrived at Dunedin from northern lighthouses yesterday afternoon. She proceeds on her journey to Eouthcrn lighthouses today.
