THE BASIN RESERVE.
AND THE CRICKETERS. ■, , d Tho announcement yesterday that the City Council at Thursday night's meeting had apparently adopted a report from the Reserves Committee- covering the opinion that tho Uasin Reserve should Iμ closed to the cricketers this season, as the ground, it was stated, would not be ready till after Iho New Year, was referred to Mr. Martin Luckic (chairman of. the Wellington Cricket .Association) by a representative of Tub Dominion yesterday with a request for a statement of opinion thereon. Mr. Luckie had little light to throw on, tho situation. Ho remarked that it was tho first ho had heard of it—his committee had no knowledge of it at its meeting on Thursday evening. At all events, lie was not prepared to soy anything about the matter at present. The Mayor (Mr. D. M'Larcn) also had nothing to add to what has already been said on tlio subject. Tho Basin Reserve was not in a fit state to Iμ ployed on, and that being so ho did not see what else there was to bo dono cscopt close it until it was ready. Taking a line through tho general gossip on tho subject, there appears to Iμ 6omo difference of opinion, the Reserves Committee's opinion notwithstanding, as to whether tho reservo will really be fit for play or not. "It depends on tho weather," Kiiid one man, 'If wo had a good spell of weather now, it would bo all right," he added. "It would pay the Cricket Association handsomely to give tlio Basin a rest for a year—they would have a. first-class field then," 6aid another man. \
