Martin aro severing their connection with the Shannon Meat Company to go into the butchering business at Tokomaru. At , a Tecent meeting of the local Debating Society Mr. J. Galland read a paper in which ho suggested that tho 60ciety might inaugurate nn essay competition amongst the , children of local 'schools. Tho committee of the society bus decided to act on the suggestion and will choose a subject for essay competition amongst the senior scholars of tho Shannon, Moutoa, and Makura Schools. Prizes will bo donated to the successful competitors.

FEATHERSTON. At the annual meeting of the Featherston Tennis and Croquet Club, the following were elected an executive committee: Messrs. D. Goddard, R. Jennings, T. Miller, Mrs. E. H. SaundeTS, and Misa Knowles. Mr. J. G. Cox was re-elected treasurer,, and Mr. J. Carson was appointed lion, secretary. The club will commence the season on October 10th. The children attending the Tauherinikau School are rehearsing an operetta entitled "The Disagreeable Princess," 'which will bo produced at the Town Hall here next month. The Kaiwaiwai Gun Club held a shooting fixture on Thursday afternoon and some good scoring was put up. R. Parker won tho novice match with a score of 10 -points (possible 10), W. Toit being second with 9. For the open handicap D. M'Calmont and C. Kompton tied with U points out of the possiblo 15. The sweepstake handicap of 12 birds was won by T. Parker (12). Other scores in this event .were: C. Kempton, 11; T. Irving,' 10; C. Fenwick, 10; L. Donald. 10; J. Laurenson, 10; B. Finn, 9; D. M'Calmont, 9. OTAKI. . Tho new cheese factory recently erected at Te Horo was officially opened yesterday, when Mr. Jeremiah Hurley, as chairman, mado the opening speech.
