NOTES AND COMMENTS.
[Br Gluncox.J _ Acceptances for the Wanganui meeting closo on Monday night, when there is also a further payment duo for the Wanganui Guineas. H. Cutts, in charge of Brown Owl and winning Way, and W. Young, with Bon Rove and Oxenhopo, arrived from Lyttelton yesterday morning nfter a very bad trip. The quartet named will go on to Wanganui by the mail train this morning. The Porirua team for Otaki will leave by this morning's train, and will be iu chargo of H. Telford, while the Wanganui contingent will go up on Monday morning in chargo of J. H. Prossor.
A host of horses from the various stables at Trentham aro being railed to Otalri this morning. They include Krnitsfortl, Merry Vulo, Odessa, Gay Lawless, and Poiiza from C. Pritcjiard's stable; Deploy (\V. Davios), War Queen (H. Clay), Obligant mid Peggy (,T. W. Lowe), Semaphore (J. Aycrs), and Lady Volley (J. Cress). Bon Ton is to bq brought North for tho Hnwke's Bay Guineas, and his trainer (I!. O'Donnell) will make the trip with him. The raco in question does not appeur as if it will bo difficult to win this year. Though Winning Waj hos been taken to Wauganui it is not by any means certain that she will start in tho Guineas, and her trip is given hor bocause she has not. been doing too well at home,. nnd iu tho hope that sho will improve with travelling. At the same Hmo, tho chestnut will be a companion for JBrown Owl to work with. J. Conquest has accepted the ride on Lord Kenown in tho big raco at Otnki, so another horseman will have to be found for Ngatimimi. K. Berry was approached and offered tho ride, but hV had booked for Odessa. The same rider has a mount in each of the flat races, and appears likely to build up ft big practice iu tho North Island. Morry Vale, who figures in the Hack, Hurdles with the minimum impost, is an aged hdilf-brotlicr by Jterriwoo to Wind—an animal that did good service for W. Davies in days gone by. Tho gelding in question is making his first appearance under silk, and is hardly likely to be dangerous at the finish, but ho is one of the tearnwuy sort, and will go with the best of them for the first mile or so. Were she back to her best form, Eoceno would take a lot of beating in tho Stewards' Hack raco at Otaki. At the Wellington meeting in April tho filly in (nictation rau two very good races in tho two-year-old ovents, and beat (amongst others) Stepney nnd Styx. If we nro to j inline by tho poor field (speaking numerically, of course) left in the Hastings Stakes it does not appear as if wo aro going to bo very fitrong in two-yonr-olds this season. If it is admitted that it is a small field in tho Itaslings race it is probably on account nf trainers not having horses sufficiently good enough to inako tho trip with. Of oour»e for various reasons, tho introduction of youngsters 1 5 wuioUmns de<
layod till well into the season, but. by this time we should have heard of moro youngsters as promising than has been tho case.
Aftor a spell of fairly fino weather, tho Tain camo down again yesterday, and its advent is not likely to improve tho state of the tracks at Otaki. Still, if there should bo fino weather from this onward, the new drainage scheme (recently installed) should leave tho course in fairly good order by noon on Monday, at which hour tho first event is sot down for decision. Fields are likely to rulo largo on the first day at least, and, given fino weather, tho meeting should be a success in every way.
"Old Jack" is informed that Carbines record on the turf in Australia was 43 starts, 33 firsts, six seconds, three thirds, and once unplaced. It is stated, on what appears to bo good authority, that Trainer A. M. Wright will not appeal against his disqualification by the Canterbury Jockey Club. ■ This year tho support accorded by owners to the Cesvrowitch and Cambridgeshire shows a considerable shrinkage l>y comparison with recent years (says a London exchange), and on the present occasion there are only 72 entries for the longdistance race as against S!) a twelvemonth ago, while for tho Cambridgeshire there are now 09 against 79 in 1911. Duality is, however fairly well represented in botli events, and, as usual, foreign owners have eoveral horses among the nominations, so that it is quite possible the highly interesting international complexion tuat has so frequently marked both races will be imparted this year. His Majesty the King accords patronage to the Cambridgeshire with Dorando and Le Lac.
Tho Wnirarapa Racing Club will gire in stakes for its Summer meeting the sum of jj2">2s. The Wairarapa Cup, to bo run on the first day, is endowed with 400 sovs., and tho Tauherinikau Handicap, on the eecond dav, is allotted 250 sovs. Third money will be provided in every race.
A capital programme has been drawn up for the Waverfev-Waitotara meeting (for hacks), which tal;es place on Labour Day. Nominations for all events closs on Friday next, September 27.
Hautere and Tui Cakobau, who are engaged in the stoeplecha.se at Avondalo next Wednesday, were schooled over the big fences at Ellerslie on Thursday. Both horses jumped well.
Undecided, Byron, Odessa, Turna, Montiform, Routine, and Obligant, whose engagements in the New Zealand Cup have been continued, nro unde.r orders to race at Otnki..
Lloyds, who was placed at the head of tho handicap in the hurdle race at Avondale, was schooled at Ellerslie on Thursday in company with Sphinx. .The latter jumped tho better of the two.
Special excursion trains have been arranged in connection with the Otaki races on Monday. Tho first train will leave the Thorndon railway station at 7.10 a.m., and another will leave at 8.20 a.m. The return fare to Otaki is 3s. lid.
In Sydney to-day tho Rosehill Racing Club's Spring meeting' will arouse much interest, as many horses engaged thero today claim more important engagements at Randwick a- fortnight later. New Zealand horses figure prominently in the entries. Kildonau, Paisano, John, and Black Northern, are entered for the
hurdles; Theodore, Peirene, and Obsono for tho Camellia Stakes; Bronze, Ermeiigarde, and Allegory for the Spring Stakes (weight-for-age); Bronze, Midnight Sun, Vice-Admiral, and Shuja for the Rosehill Handicap; and Ermengardo and Sir Artegal for the Rydalmere Mile. ,
The Q.T.C. St. Lcger, Exhibition Handicap, and Brisbane Cup winner, Goard, is intended to finish the balance of his Melbourne Cup preparation at Flemington, under tho care of W. S. Hickenbothain. He has incurred 71b. penalty in Caulfield and Melbourno Cups, which increases his weight in the former to Bst. 121b. and in the latter to Bst. 91b. .Good judges put Goard down to be one of the best horses sent out of Queensland for a long timo.
