OPEN-AIR EVANGELISM.
Open-air religious meetings ore rapidly multiplying under the direction of (he Evangelistic Committee of Xcw York City. One of the distinguishing features of tlie tent open-air, and shop campaigns is the number of "auxiliary meetings" held in co-operation-with the young ■ people's societies and brotherhoods of churches of all .denominations.. Hv who strolls along avenue or boulevard in ; the early evening, especially.on Sunday, is more than likely to find himself running into a. devotional service at somo street corner or on tho steps of a church. The close union of clergymen and laymen in the work of tho Evangelistic Committee of Now York City is non-hurt? more signally demonstrated than in tho conduct of the auxiliary ineetirigs. . :
Several .churches have already swung into line for'(his season, ainoiij; thorn the Fourth Presbyterian ' Church, Rutgers Church, Washington Square Methodist Episcopal, Elmendorf Chapel (K«formed Church); audiences of 500 or more assemble, with frequently a targe, number remaining to tho later. service, indoors. Last summer over 18,000 attended the auxiliary meetings. Especial training for this work is given each winter nt tho sresions of . the Evangelistic Institute, where young men and women moct for instruction in personal work and oponair speaking. No season has been more encouraging than the one recently closing, with a. rally addressed by Gipsy Smith. After remarks by the chairman, Orin C. Baker, and the Rev. Dr. John Hcnrv .Towett, Dr. Arthur J. Smith; superintendent of, tho committee,.challenged the young people to meet tho demand'for service during tho summer. The response was enthusiastic This branch of (lie general. tent, open-air,' and shop campaigns will this season be in charge of Kcnipev ll'Comb, of Lafayette College.
