COUNCIL'S 81-WEEKLY MEETING. When tho City Council met last night for the usual fortnightly meeting, the Mayor (Mr. D. M'Larenj presided, and there were also present: Councillors R. Fletcher, G. Shirtcliffc, John Fuller, inn., E. Tregear, W. H. I'. Barlwr, ,1. Godber, A. U. Atkinson, J. Trevor, G. Frost, F. Cohci\, John Smith, L. M'Kcnzie, J. 13. Fitzgerald, aud li. A. Cameron. I't ivas resolved that tho Government should be requested to review Iho whole of the exemptions under tho.Rating Act, in consequence of the. recent, decision iu tho case of the Wellington Hospital and Charitable Aid Board v. the Wellington City Corporation. The Finance Committee reported that the City Engineer had informed the committee that, he had held an inquiry into the question or the working conditions of the destructor. Of tho 10 matters in "dispute, 8 had been settled, and the remaining 2 were being inquired into further, aud the result would be reported later. _ 1 It. was decided that the Superintendent of Reserves should be given complete control over the workmen in his department, subject to the men having the right of appeal. In connection with the Fish Markets, it was decided that on no account will tisli l.e reserved or placed ou one side for any person. After tho appointment of n salesman, the completion of the necessary printing, aud the installation of a telephone; table, and scales, together with sundry small requisites, the markets will be opened for use as speedily as nossihle. Tenders were, aocepted as follow:— Wood blocks, Powellised Timber Company; cast-iron pipes, John Duthie. An offer was received from the Ferry Company to sell land at Day's Bay. After discussion it was decided that no further action should be taken, as far as tho City Council was concerned.
