ARTS CLUB CONCERT.

■ Various counter-attractions elsewhere no doubt accounted for a somewhat small attendance at the Arts Club concert ia the Town Hall last evening. His Excellency tho Governor (Lord Islington) : was preseut, and during the interval deliverbrief address, appropriate to the occasion. Tho programme, artistically, was a. very good one, and had the addi. tional merit of interesting variety, the constituent items consisting of songs, a quartet, a dialogue, u lecturettc, ana instrumental and numbers. Miss Nellie Castle (mezzo-soprano) sang, with fair success, Goring Thomas's "My Heart is Weary." Miss Zelma R. Hugo, who is tlie possessor of a rich contralto voice, which careful cultivation should earn some distinction on the concert platform,, eang "Melisando in tho 'Wood," with pleasing expression, though her ■ production was somewhat laboured. Miss Dorothy "Wells, a young violinist,. contribute!! Rubenstein s "Uevc Augelique. In his 'cello solo, Tartine's "Adagio, Mr. F. R. Johnstone played with characteristic care and tasteful expression, and Mr. Horace Hunt's pianoforte minibor, "Cnprice Espngnol was also enjoyable. Songs were also contributed by Messrs. R. S. Alhvnght (Mallinson's "Song of the Torrent ), and \V. H. Church (.Jwle's 'Tlvmonth sound ). •\ nuartet party from the Orpheus Gloo Club sang Dudley Beck's unaccompanied l part-song, "In Absence"; the orchestra, from the Society of Musicians contributed the "Toy Symphony," of .which three movements—the "Allegro Vivace,' Ant danto con Expressions, ana Allegro, con Brio"-'~were written respectively by: Mr. Maughau Barnctt, Mr. L. F. Watkins, and Mr."Horace Hunt, and perform-,' ed successfully in Wellington quite . recently. An interesting item was tu«' amusing dialogue, "He and She, by Miw Ruby Scott and Mr. Norman Aitken (of the Wellington Dramatic Club), ""hue not tho least valuable contribution to th® ; programme was the 16-minute leeturetts series of projcctoscope views (by slr. Hudson (from the French Club), the descriptive matter being illustrated bv a series of proctoscopic views <hy Mv.
