THE HUTT ROAD.

DATE OP INQUIRY FIXED. Something definite in regard to tliein- : qui'ry iinto the apportionment of thecost of the . construction of the Hutt Road was forthcoming at last night's meeting of; the Onslow Borough Council. A letter was received from the Commissioner,' Mr. W. S. Short, in Teply to a communication from tho council,askingfor particulars as to the cost'of . the road and the duplication of .the! Hutt railway, line stating that the inquiry to fix the proportions to be borne.by tho local authorities concerned would be held in the .S.M. Court building on September 30. In a further memo, tne Commissioner said that in order tn prevent misunderstanding and to save the tim<> of the numerous parties to.the inquiry, he intended on the opening of the inquiry to state what he believed to'be the i&sues before the commission,, and after hearing objections, to settle.the same. Next ho would moke arrangements for tallies of traffic on the road to bo taken in such,manner as may be shown to be equitable. Mr. Short added that he proposed that the inquiry should then be adjourned until after the results of: tho tallies wero known. At the adjourned inquiry it would be competent for any party thereto to adduce such ■.relevant evidence as would in its opinion support its view of the case. Under these , circumstances witnesses ' would not re-' . quire to be in attendance on September 301 In conclusion Mr. Short stated that lie was informed that the cost of the road to date was .£97,93,5. Bs. 4d. to which minst be ndded outstanding charges estimated to amount to ,£685 together with interest-on amount expended. ' The Mayor (Mri F. Holdsworth) was ' appointed to attend the opening of the . inquiry on behalf of the council.
