S.S. SQUALL HITS FLOATING LOG.

Tho steamer Squall, while on her pro per course coming out of Tolago Bay foi Gisborno yesterday morning, struck n submerged ouject, and armed at Gisborne yesterday in a leaky condition. All extra pump was procured, and the water easily kept • down, temporary repairs Ixntig effected. The Squall is expected to leave to-night for Auckland, i \ Later. , Captain Stewart, of tlio Squall, states that the submerged object must hav« been a log. It struck the vessel amidships, and dented the butt of one plate, starting five rivets. The steamer made water immediately. A mat \yas aflixoii over the damaged plate, and the three ship's pumps kept the water in check. The mishap occurred just as tlio stenwev, cleared Tolago,' about three-quarters c a milo off land. •
