MATTERS OF INTEREST FROM FAR AND NEAR.
Accidents by the Way. Claims for damages of a rather peculiar nature are occasionally received bv trough council nnd road heard- (sav's •in exchange). Ihe claimant duly received her "}!" a « es i - vt a meeting of tlio Mount Albert- Borough Council, a somewhat similar claim was received. In this inlance the lady had occasion to go to the tront -ot her house, with the result that she had several boles burnt in her blouse »} sparks coming from a steam roller forking on the road. She assessed the damage at 10s. Bd. Amid some laughter, the council decided to leave the matter in the hands of Mr. F. J. Ellisdon. At the Hutt Flower Show. Visitors to the Hull Valley Horticultural Society's spring show could not fail to Have extracted from their visit a great deal ol pleasure at the sight of the very beautiful.blooms that were to be seen iii such profusion. Experts havo said that yesterdays show was reallv quite unsurpassed by previous occasions, aud one could well believe if. The nurserymen's exhibits, mounted on stands in different parts of the room, -were, with their beautiful .flowering pot-plants, blooms, and foliage plants, exceedingly ornamental, and met with much admiration. ,rvobably the most arresting table in the room was the one given over to the anemones, and the rich vividness of their colouring was a jov to behold. It was an abandoned, . gipsy-like table, insolently noting, in warmth aud life, and difficult to leave.
Very beautiful.were the flowers occupy. ln ß a stand close By the entrance door (exhibits sent in by Mr. Graham Harvey), and beautiful-in on infinitely liioro cultured, way. Here were cyclamens, pure while, .red shading into cerise, and delicate pink and la-vender, and votes containing magnificent carnation?, some white as snow, others with the delicate pink-glow of sunrise, and others scarlet and deep crimson. A curious Dower that attracted much attention was the billbergia'(|uinlusiana, a long spiky thing, of a deep rose shade in colouring". Of the narcissi family much could be said.. Two somewhat new varieties were the Bernadino and Bedonia, and there Was also another variety .with a curiouslv ashen apricot trumpet. Beautiful, also were the Leedsii Elane, puro white and largo in size, and there were some magnificent blqonis of,the "Glory of Leydpii." A portion of tho hall was separated from the remainder by a white trellis work, arid in the lower end afternoon tea was obtainable. The stage also had been decorated with a trellis work with floral ornamentations,, and -a-string band,' stationed below, played at intervals during the afternoon.
Mrs. Chapman, tho president's wife, wore a dress of speedwell blue charmeuse with panels of embroidery on the skirt, veiled by an overdress of ninon. Her large hat was of white straw trimmed with biscuit-coloured grass and touches of black velvet. Mrs.. Wilford wore a navy bine coat and skirt and emerald green 'hat. ' Mrs. Midlane, accompanied bv her two daughters, Mrs.; A;Simm, and Miss Nellie Midlane, loft by the Main Trunk exnress on Tuesday for a .three months' holiday in Auckland. Wei-, lington South, to celebrate the nineteenth anniversary of the granting of the franchise to women. Mr. I?. A. Wright and' Mrs. Pcrymnu are to speak, and recitations, and' solos will bo given by friends. Most women value the privilege \bov have in their hands of being able to vote, and although nineteen years ago manv went to the polling booths with fear and trembling, to-day they go with as much confidence as men. It should prove a most interesting.meeting : to both men and women. Mrs. Evans, M;A„ will preside. The meeting is free to all. Canon and Mrs. Garland intend leaving, at the end of the week, on a visit to Auckland. Mrs. Cockburn Hood, \\iio has been staying at "Kenilworth," left for Ma., terton on Tuesday. Mrs. G.
