NEW ZEALAND GOLF.
M'CORMICK DEFEATS CLEMENTS, AMATEURS AND -PROFESSIONALS. The golf championship was continued at.Horetmmga yesterday in fino weather. The. links arc- still damp and spotted with pools of water, but .with a couple more days like yesterday they should bo in good golfing order for Saturday. It was decided to establish a temporary local rule, allowing a player to pick his ball out of tho mud'and drop it behind him without losing a stroke. Hud this decision been arrived at earlier, the scores in tho open championship would have been 'much better. Tho first TOund of tho amateur championship -was tho most interesting event of the day. A. Duncan , played H. 13. Lusk, of Chrisfchurch, anil as the gamo progressed, it became tho centre of interest to spectators. Duncan was not playing as well as he usually does, and did not 6eem to be ablo to keep his shots straight, and frequently left the fairway. Lusk played steadily, and kept Duncan well in sight—going out, their respective.scores being Duncan 42, Lusk 41. Coming in, Lusk brightened up, and looked overy bit a. winner. He did tho teenth to tho fifteenth in 22, averaging two under 4. At the sixteenth, Lusk took five and Duncan Dnly three, and again at the seveatceth ho took another-fivc, and Duncan four. At 1 the finish Lusk registered 82 and Duncan 79. So far, this ib Duncan's best score. . B. B. Wood v. W. B. - Colbeck also proved to be a good gamo from the spectators' point of- view. Wood played with more confidence than he had shown previously during tho open championship. He was driving a long ball, and was putting with great accuracy. Colbeck played better than he did in the open, and put. nn a good fight to the end, and was only beaten two up and one. The defeat of S.' C. Burns by W; Harman, one up at the nineteenth, " was rather a surprise, but Harman played a very consistent game, and deserved his win on the round. '.-.•, The following are still in the amateur championship, and will plav off to-day:— G. T. George, T. Harold, A. D. S.-Dnni can, G. Pharazyn, Win. Horton, A. M? Kennaday, W. Harman, H. 0. Wright, P. C. Wright, J. Gpss, B. L. Taylor, B. B. Wood, Kapi Tareha, K. D. Duncan, A. G. Seifert, H. Gillies. ... PROFESSIONALS' MATCH. It. was generally the opinion that Clements, who had won the open championship, would win the professionals' (natch as well.. It .was, therefore, srmewhafc of u surpriso lo most when it was known ; that he had been beaten ;by M'Cormick. Both were playing good gt If, und were .very evenly matched. They continued winning and losing the lead, ■' the chances see-sawing, from ono to tho other up Co tho twenty-first hole, whore Jl'Cormick finished the victor. Tho Wellington professional Watt vc-nt down to- D. Hood, three up and two' to play.' Neither w*re playing with great confidence, although Watt's defeat was.attributed to faulty putting. - . . .-■' FOUfi-BALL HANDICAP. - ' The.following is the draw for the fourball handicap, which will be played today:—.-' \ ■■..'■"' F. ; H.
