TAILORESSES DISPUTE.
The dispute which has arisen between tho Wellington Tailoresses' and Pressors' Union and tho employers was heard before tho Conciliation Commissioner Ofr. P. Ifnlly) yesterday. The assessors for tho union were: Miss L. Denhnm. tailoress, Dunedin, and Messrs. 11. Slater, pressor, Dunedin, and — Davy, cutter, Dunedin. The Hon. J. T. Paul appeared as their agent. Messrs. P. Kerens, A. Levy, and — Kerr, were tho assessors for the employers (fourteen of whom were cited), Mr. Grenfell appenring as their agent. In their statement of demands, the union asks for a 44-hour week instead of 45 hours, with a minimum wage of-. 30s. ner week, as against 255., for failoresses;, For tirst-class cutters they ask <£3 15s. per week with a minimum of £3 55.. as ngainst. £2 155., and the same minimum is a-ske'd for pressers. The union also asks that the wage for all main machinists should bo specifically stated. The employers' counter-proposals are all based on the existing award. They do nbt agreo with tho preference clause inserted by the union, as it is (in their opinion) ion stringent. The employers ask for. the same preference clause which- is contained in the woollen mills award.
