' Tne scores handed in were not.good for the.links, but raking into consideration the wind and. the' state '6! the ground, nothing elso could be expected except from a really good player on. the top of his foTlii. None- of -the best . players .'surpassed themsolvcs, and nearly all were > rather sad that they had not duno 'better.' There was a larger attendance- of .Visitors than oil the first day, and qujto a number followed Clements iind Wo'od, as soon ns-'it became apparent that one .'or-the other of them would be th'e champion. •. .•■■..'

He completed 'the eighth to eleven, and thus ■converted what might -have been a good going-out score into a rather weak one. Coming in -he picked up considerably by doing the Sixteenth and seventeenth 'feaen in three, and eventually finished his third round with a total of happened to to the. lowest score.forthat round, with the exception of J.'C. As the scores stood'at the'end of the third round, Wood was four up on both Clements and Butters, .nhd :'it xertaihly Jooked as if he had the best than'ce. of: the three, and if it. had not taken him eleven to. do the eighth, he. Wood started on his fourth and last round playing better than he had done iu any of his previDus rounds, and appeared tb.be improving. ■Hβ was on. He thus took eight, to do the hole, and VQtb out in 12. He struck a tree with , his drive, and lost another ball, but with ft masnincHit pott did the tenth in four. Ho took six to do the twelfth, but for the Test of tlu round playecl very carefully, doing the majority of the holes in four. Clement?, playing With Duncan, c'otamenced his last round, playing steadily, ■but not very brishtly.- - At the fifth hole he drove out of bounds, but made up for it with a beautiful second off the tee, and did the hole in four. • He ihpn bcijah • te improve in his putiin?, and went oat in.4o, thus starting two up en Wood. Coming in, he settled doivn. and played excellent golf. His approach shots were perfect, and his putting much better thnn in.his..previous rounds. Wood was driring a loiigei; ball, but was iiot. ?b clever in Betting, on to the grcen. -'Clement's second shots were sis , a rule his best. •J)espit« the wind he kept very straight and coming in seldom sot out of the fairiwny. He did the 14th. in three perfect ! shots—quite his best performance during tho round.- The- 16th and 17th he managed with fours nnd took five for the last, which gave him the round at a total of. 76—the-best score iu the chamnion.fhip. . _ . _ .-.. ' . . ' It was his coming-in ganie of his fourth Toundthat gave Clements the chainnio'nehip. Wood plavcd well and carefully, but Clements played brilliantly. His short'■ strokes were picturesque and his putting more certain than. Wood's thoush Wood several times saved himfelf with khs. putts-.- For instance,.vih his third round at tho twelfth hols. Wood holed out with-.a six-foot putt and again at the tehth hpla in his fourth round he made n similar-shot. But with his wonderful approach shots to help, him . Clements eared himself, the necessity for long putts nnd his short ones were accurate which was all- that was heeded. • The new champion is. to be congratulated- upon his performance.
