GREAT RISE IN THE I MURRAY

Melbourne, September 17. I'or several days there have been gales and deluges of rain in Victoria. The rise in tho tributaries of the Murray Uiver is unprecedented. The water at Alexandra is higher than in the 1870 flood. Bridge* mid live slock have boon swept away. The (joulbnrn. Bridge, at Upper Thornton, collapsed just alter a drover and several thousand sheep had crossed. The rain in this district has been accompanied by ii terrific wind, which tore down a brick kiln and trws and unroofed houses. A man named Thomas Quinlivnn was drowned in the Ovens River. Six and a half inches of rain have fallen since Friday. The rise in the Mitta Mitta River is the highest for fifty years. Residents and stock are moving to places of safety. Stockmen at Tallangatta were caught without warning, and suffered heavy losses. RESCUED FROM TREE-TOPS. (Rec. September 17, 9.35 p.m.) i, Melbourne, September 17. The rivers are still rising. Two men, by using a cattle trough, rescued two refugees from tree-tops along the Goulburn Eiver.
