Erni'engarde,- carrying slb; more-than-her Epsom.allowance, after flattering her supporters .until the straight, finished fifth in the Tramway Handicap. HUTT VALLEY TROTTING CLUB; The annual meeting of the Hutt Valley Trotting Club was held last evening, Mr.

A. Samuel presiding. .The report and balance sheet indicated a good season, and a credit balance of ! JE3O2 Ss. 7d. The report -added that, when the fact is taken.tihto consideration that the elub was .penalised by only having :one day's, racing -per annum'members should he gratified withrtho-result disclosed. ' Like all New Zealand horses who go to Sydney, at this time, of: ilio-.ycar, Shuja seems to.be'.improving.. ■ His second, toDanausin the-Spring Handicap at Raud- ■ trick, proves the. statement. The ten fliplongs'.was left, behind' in 2min. Bsec. ! , which'is a-very good gallop > for this time of (ha year. ■' . The Trentham trainer, A. Goodman, ,has been apppinted private trainer to Mr. C. J. Parker, of Gisboriie, and will leavo for his-new home this'morning. His two charges—the progeny- of Vladimir and Knight Errant—are to. be given to J. Cress .to train;.

Tho grass gallop at Trentham was thrown open, for use on Saturday morn,ing- last,'and.was largely availed of. The : heavy, rain of the night previous made fast going, out of. the question, and.'it' took most of the-horses lmin..2Bsec. and' over to cover' six. furlongs.

From Riccarton comes word-that Taskmaster, is-standing, up to his work well, iand;is likely to.bo given a race at Dunediit next- month. The Chokeborc- stable will- bo. represented by Brown Owl and Quarantine at the AVanganui meeting next-w'eek;

Despite tho' fact-that lie has- been uponly.some five' weeks, True Knight' was welt supported: in the- open., handicap ■ wonby-Coroniform), at Ashburton, but ■no had the,.ill-fortune, to be left at tho barrier, aud took no part in the race. He is in the Geraldine Cap with'Sst. 51b.. ■and; has'Bst. in the';Jfosgiel.Handicap at uunedm next month. • '

St. Kevin, after, his gocd- form at the National meeting; was 1 made- the public fancy m the Hurdles at Ashburton, .but ho- was. very sore, and this, combined with n rather poor, exhibition, of horsemanship by his ruler,.brought about' his- defeat. He was not started, again at the meeting. Southern; Cross must surely be the oldest hurdle horse racing at the'present time. After a spell of twelve months theom uaystar gelding made- his reappearance. 1:1. the Hurdles at Ashburton on ihursday-last, but he showed no pace at-all, and was one of the last to finish, two other, ancients—Medallist and Probable—were also" racing at. the same meotingi'but.though the-former, started a very warm favourite in the six furlongs race on the second day. he failed badlv.

Several southern horsemen interested in the Hegarty-Bhras. : boxing, cemtest aro at presant in Wellington.

Mr.. J> Henrys,, the Dmiedin handicap■per;. placed- a very high estimate on the abilities-of the Trentliam-trainod.Cevlon. In. the AVelter. event at Dimcdin ' the Signalman.mare is', placed within 71b. of Magdala. the' AVinfer. Cup winner, and within 51b. of Jlartine, who lasl week placed tho Ashburton Handicap to her credit.

Acco-rdirtg to the cabled account Ermengards ran. quite a g-r.od rice at Eandwick, and was in front to the' (urn. Still the distance in the Epsom Handicap is drto' mile, and, as if., scorns that the staying ability.' of tho filly has cot improved,' there, is no reason to imagine that she will g-3fc a; milo successfully when full pressure is on the whole way. and none of tho competitors are pulling an. r.unce. This is usually the way an Epsom Handicap is run.

Two prominent Melbourne Cup candidates—The. Parisian and Bobndea—ran badly in the Memsie Stokes at Caulfield on-Saturday .week. They were' entered for the Men tone Cup, run last Saturday, and, if started, must, have again disappointed their connections.

A jockey, named E. HelYernan, rode four winners at the Queensland Turf Club's meeting in Brisbane on September

The death occurred in Sydney last week of Mr. J. Poole, for many years, a bookmaking member of Tattersail's Club. He came from New Zealand several years ago (says the Sydney "Referee"), and it was hot- long ere he was both liked and respected in his calling. He retired from the bookinaking ranks a few years ago.

Lady Medallist, prior to first forfeits for the Epsom and Metropolitan, was solidly supported for the Caulfield Cup, and is now favourite for that race, two points in advance of Royal Scotch. Lady Medallist has'l2lb. moro than she carried las; year.

Mr. Harry H. Hnyr, serrehrv of tho Avondale Jockey Club, afterbeing prostrated with two successive illncs-ies. is now" able to attend to his official duties, and is on the mend again..

At tho Queensland Turf Club's meeting on September 7 the outstanding performance of tho afternoon was that put up by Oweu'Koo in tho Open Handicap. He had previously shown what good stuff he veas made of. and it was-only by the bad luck of being handled by 'an ines-

- porienced apprentice that ho did not win the Exhibition Handicap, which went to Guard. For the Open Hamiicnp.ho was inado an odds-on favourite, and in I£effernan's hands he gave the opposition a blear run of his heels all tho way, and won pulling up in the good time of liuin. 2(jsei:. for the seven furlongs. This, with 9st. Jib. in the saddle, was a remarkable feat, and no doubt it will have m-.do jsuch an impression on the Queensland I handjeapper that the horse will qiMckly i have to change Ins sphere ("ays tho '' Ueficreo").- Owen Ro.i is by the- Auckland ) Cup winner Nonette. | ' _____ . \ FIXTURES.
