The recent earthquake snapped the gloss cement bands covering cracks in tho interior qf tho dome of tho Mosque of St. Sophia, showing that tho long-standing tlirust of the dome continues, and is forcing the supporting columns outward. A restoration is considered imperative to prevent a collapse. The Mosque of St. Sophia is tho most famous edifice in Constantinople. It was originally erected in 326, and was added to from time to time during the succeeding centuries. In 1847 a' thorough restoration was undertaken by an Italian architect. The dome, which is 105 feet in diameter and 184 feet in height, rises on four massive pillars. ■ >
