There is beautiful weather for -, the •flawke's Bay-Now .South Wales I.eaguo match. .Consi(lerabl6 interest was created in the town by the' action, of certain Etigby officials in-regard to a special stand erected for the North v. South Island match. The Rugby- Union offered the League the Use of the stand at what was 'considered an exorbitant figure, and, failing an agreement, the Eligby Officials dismantled the stand and carted tho itimber away. The J.eagtie officials started i to work at midnight, nnd* helped'.by the" ivisiting team and many residents whose ;sympathy with Ellglly had been alienated jby the ill-advised tactics of a few, relerected the stand, ond it was .completed long before tho match started. In the presence of a crowd of somo 3000 people, tho - League '■ gaiiic, NcW South - Wales v. Hawke's Bay. was played nt the Recreation Ground to-day, in splendid i weather. The exhibition of the visitors . was in many respects a revelation, and llthoiigh they w&h by a large margin of points, the. score hardly indicates the nature of the gartie. Tho local men put up n surprisingly good fight against a superior ..- combination of Visitors, and their tackling was remarkably good. The game Was remarkably free from any element of rough!ness, and was played in an admirable ' 'spirit throughout, Tho score at half-time was: New South Wales, 18 points; - 'Hawko's Bay, .3 poi'nts. Tries were scored for the vieitors by Glccson, David (2), aud Cann, Frawley. converting thfee. John- • eon seored for Hawke's Bay. -In the.second fipell, .Deanc, Frawlcy. Tho weather was fine, and tho ground being in perfect condition, there Was every ' opportunity of good footbiiU- being witnesGed. Under the circumstances it is not .mirprwklg'that tho visitors gave a brll- • liaflt exposition,' The local players, too t
> were a fine tenni, find individually showed capital form, but, as regards cleverness and the science of. the League game, they were outclassed. The spectators wore delighted with tho superb passing rushes, and the League game, which was played in «. fine spirit, had a very successful'initiation in this district.
