« REPUBLICAN VICTORY IN MAINE. Br Telegraph—Press Association-CopTrieht k ' Portland, September 10. The Republicans have captured tho Governorship of the State of Maine by a small majority. The results of tho elec- , tions for other offices are still doubtful. The Progressives controlled the Republican machine throughout the contest. They aro not running a candidate, acting in this matter on Mr. Roosevelt's advice; a split has been postponed until after the State elections. Although losing tho Governorship, tho Democrats believe they arc sufficiently powerful to secure control of tho other offices.' (Rec. September 11, 8 p.m.) Washington, September 10. Mr. Roosevelt claims that the result of the Maine elections is a victory for the Progressives, as the new Governor is really an adherent of the Roosevelt party, and that understanding led Mr. Roosevelt not to contest the elections against the Regular Republicans. The Regular Republicans have also claimed tho Governor as an adherent.
