DISPUTE OVER THE SCORE.
TROUBLE IN A BILLIARD-EOOM. | (Bi Teleeranh—Press Assoolatlor.) Auckland, September 11. As tho result of a dispute over the score in a gamo of billiards, Joseph Bertie Boveridge appeared at the Police Court on a charge of having assaulted Chas. O'Brienj on September 5 so as to cause actual bodily harm. Detective-Sergeant Cox eonducted tho prosecution, and Mr. Singer appeared for accused. Detective-Sergeant Cox said that O'Brien was tho marker in the billiard-room of the City Hotel. On September 5, at about C p.m., Bevoridgo was playing a- game ol billiards with another man in the room in which O'Brien was marking. Bevcridge inquired the score, and O'Brien said that it stood at 71 to 53 against accused. Bcveridgo said that this was wrong, and O'Brien turned round to the board tx, explain the score. "While he thus had his back to Bevcridge accused struck him on the head with the butt end of the cue. Complainant put up his hands to defend his head, and accused struck him one or two more blows, knocking tho tip of his finger off and injuring his head. Accused then threw down tho cuo and ran out of tho room, and later in tho day was arrested. Dr. Hope deposed to having examined the complainant's injuries. lie had three scalp wounds, in which witness had had to put several stitches, and hod lost twothirds of tho last joint of tho second finger of his left hand. It was possible that the wounds had been given by means of the cue produced, especially 'if complainant put his hands over his head. Accused pleaded guilty, and was committed to tho Supreme Coutl for sentence. 'Bail was granted.:in twd:surcties of £50 each, or one of .£IOO.
