Vice-Eegal/. His Exoelloncy the Governor and Lady Islington have signified their intention of being present at the Arts Club concert on September 19. Thollon. Maurice Baring;, who has for some weeks past l)cen a guest of his Excellency the Governor, leaves for America en routo to England by tho jMoana tomorrow. Count Von West, of Germany, who is touring tho world, arrived from Sydney by the' Moeraki yesterday. He is to visit Itotoruo. this week, and will probably leave Auckland for Sydney again on Monday next Mr. Justice Edwards returned from New Plymouth last night. Ho leaves for Napier about Monday next. Mr. Oscar Ascho and Miss Lily Brayton, heads of the dramatic organisation which is to commence a tour of NewZealand at Auckland on Monday next, arrived from Sydney by the Moeraki yesterday, and went on to Auckland by yesterday's Main Trunk express. Mr. Herbert Grimwood, another member of. tho company, and Mr. B. Meyer (manager for Mr. Ascho) were also passengers by the same steamer. Mr. Victor Booth, examiner to tho Associated Board "of the Eoyal Academy and Eoval College of Music, London, is now in Auckland conducting examinations on behalf of the hoard. He will probably reach Wellington about October 4, but the examinations will not commence here before October 9. Mr. Booth leaves for the south about October 19. Mr. H. N. Pharazyn, of Napier, was a passenger from Sydney by tho Moeroki yesterday. Mr. Justice Sim arrived from Wanganui last night and will preside at tho sittings of the Court of Arbitration which open this morning. The Hon. R. G. Whiteley, second son of Lord Marchamley, arrived in Auckland by the Eotorna express on Monday. He has been touring Australia and the South Island of New Zealand. He is disappointed at the narrowness of the Australian spirit from an Imperial point of view, but has been cheered bo find that New Zealand is proceeding on broader lines, with its contiguous schemes of an Imperial army and Imperial fleet. Mr. Whiteley, who left by the Atua on Tuesday, intends to visit Honolulu, and have a peep at) Japan and India en route to England. The Bov. Father Roche- was a passenger from Sydney by the Moeraki yesterday. Mr. Cray, of Timaru, nrrivod from the south by the Maori yesterday. He is the president of the Caroline Bay Association, which controls one of the finest and bestappointed bathing beaches in tho Dominion. Mr. Oswald Becro returned from a trip to Sydney by tho Moeraki yesterday. Messrs. H. E. Troutbeck and E. D. Kettle, of Napier, are visitors to Wellington. The Kev. Father Holbrook, of Auckland, celebrated the 10th anniversary of his ordination to tho priesthood on Sunday and Monday. At a gathering held on Monday Bishop Cleary and Bishop Grimes, as well as a large number of the clergy of tho Church were present. Father Holbrook was the recipient of many presentations in honour of the event. Ho intends to celchralo tho next anniversary at his home in Wexford, Ireland, and will probably leave Auckland on the HouiewaTd trip early next year. After a residence of thirty years in Fiji, Captain Callaghan and Mrs. Callaghan will leave in November for Auckland, where they will in future reside. For twenty-seven years Captain Callaghan was master of the Government steamer Clyde, and resigned eight years ago. No man in Fiji can tell more interesting stories of Vice-regal journeyines ami junketings in Fiji (says tho "Fiji Times"), and his fund of anecdotes of happenings in various parts of the group would mnko a very readablo book.
