KARORI TRAM FARES.
*- ' V INCREASE THEM? QUESTION AGAIN DISCUSSED. v ' A motion moved by Councillor Burn ( of the Karori Borough Council, at the. last meeting of the council'was discussed nt some length nt last night's meeting. Tho Mayor (Mr. C. Cathie) presided, and the following councillors were present:— Messrs!'' Burn,' Stauden, Hamilton, Frost, Bradnock. and Hildreth, Councillor Burn's motion had been:—• "That the following fares on the Karori tramway system shall be charged on-Sun-days:—'From tho Botanicnl Gardens to. Northland (any distance in either direc' tion), 2d.; from Northland to Johnston' Street (the Cemetery, any distance in either direction), 2d.,- for tho through journey from the Botanical Gardens to ihe Council Chambers or vieo versa, 3d.;, concession tickets issued by tho Karori ( 3orough Council shall he available on. Sunday cars as usual.' " The motion also provided :—"That tho above alterations come_ into force as soon as possible." This had been carried at the previous meeting. At the meeting last evening, discussion arose on the Mayor moving to rescind Councillor Burn's motion and substituting another. The Mayor stated that in passing Councillor Burn's motion the council would be running considerable risk, as the motor 'buses from Northland would lie ninning in the course of a few weeks. : He thought that patience should be ex-' . ercised in the matter. It would be an unwise thing to carry such a motion, but ho agreed with Councillor Burn that i there was a necessity for more revenue. Mr. Hildreth stated that he would hail ; with delight the day on which the motoi > buses came. The additional charges i (amounting to .£800) put on the boroucV could only be overcome by increasing tho fares. He did not think that'"patience" should be exercised at all. Mr. Burn.gave tho figures relating to the number of passengers carried and the. i takings on tho four Sundays in August.; On those four Sundays, he stated, S4O2J ; passengers wero carried from the Botani-' : cal Gardens, and tho takings had amount*' ed to £aa 13s. Bd. Assuming that his uio- ' tiou came into force, and the extra penny. ' were added, in' tho caso of the 8000 odd " persons, the addition would result in a 1 total of .£9O odd, <is against £55 13s. Bd. ' I He also pointed out that the concession' :' 'ticket is not transferable, and consequent-' 1 ly, if a passenger purchased a concession • ticket, he could use it only for himself. The Wellington City Council had in--3 'creased the borough's charges, and ho 3 felt sure that the general public would ba " with tho borough in the attempt to in-: " crease their revenue. The City Council had increased tho borough's car mileage 3 cost, and tho borough hod to make up tho ' increase. Ho thought that the action of. s the Northland ratepayers in going to the 3 City Council and asking them to put on " thirteen extra cars on the Northland run, " without first consulting the Karori Council, 'was a gross injustice to the council. 3 'Tho City Council had put the extra cars 3 on at tlio expense of the borongh. Mr. Standen moved: "That the discussion be adjourned until next Tuesday, anc" that in the meantime a committee; con'' sisting of the Mayor and Messrs. Burn a and Hildreth, wait on the Tramway-Board r to discuss the matter." ■ The motion was seconded by Councillors Hamilton and carried. It was then decided that a special meet- > ing of tho council would be lield on Tues-'. i day: next for the purpose of further dis< ; cussing the matter.
