A paper on "Antarctic Exploration" !ft'as road before the British Association for the Advancement of Science by Sir Clements Markham, president of the Koyal Geographical Society and an old Arctic exploror. Sir Clements Markham paid a tribute to Captain Scott, whom he described as tho greatest of all Polar explorers, and whose expeditions had been tho most fruitful. Ho believed that Captain Scott intended to solve the question ■whether the Victoria Land and King Edward Land mountains functioned; also to solve the problem of the Great Ico Barfrier. (Rec. September 10, 10.30 p.m.) London, September 10. Sit Clements Markham predicted that Captain Scott would bo at tho Polo on January 4. Dr. Bruce, in a paper on Captain Scott's, Sir Ernest Shackleton's, and Captain Amundsen's explorations, supported tho theory that thero was one land-mass in Antarctica, equalling Australia and Europe combined. All recent investigations showed thnt Australia, New Zealand, Africa, nnd South America had once been connected with tho Antarctic Continent. Dr. Marshall, Mr. R. R. Brown, and Mr. G. V. Hodgson took part in the discussion. Professor Chilton described the exploration of tho islands south of New Zealand. .''.'' : CAPTAIN AMUNDSEN. HIS OBSERVATIONS CHECKED, (Rec. September 10, 10.30 p.m.) Christiana, September 10. Captain Amundsen, discoverer of the South Pole, lectured before the Geographical . Society, King Haakon and Queen Maud,, and tho Cabinet. Captain Amundsen read a letter from Professor Alexander, who had examined his observations. Captain Alexander states that : the expedition was within a few metres of the Pole.
