PALMERSTON DAY BY DAY.
(By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) "Palmerston, September 10. Mr. J. Anderson (late manager) and Mr. A. A. Glen'dining (late secretary), of the Longburn Freezing Works, were entertained nt a "social" last night prior to th?ir leaving Langbu'rn, the former to take up fanning and the latter to go to the Old Country. Presentations were made to both. . ■ . A contract-has been let for the erection, of business premises in George Street, in for.ra-concrpto, at ,£2265'. This is thu first building in Palmerston to be erected of this/,material. At the.monthly meeting of the Council of the Chamber of Commerce last evening there vrt.? 1 a considerable amount of discussion on' the matter of the proposed suh-wav under. pr.ok .Street, and'the action of the Borough'X'ouncil in demanding that it should be made available for vehicle, traffic. The .general feeling was .averse to the sub-way being anything more than for pedestrians. As the Mayor had intimated that he would call a public meeting to deal .with the question, it. was decided not to take any action until it was ascertained what would be done at. the meeting. The question of establishing industries in Palmerston, such as a woollen mill, jam factory, soap and candle works, etc., was. also discussed, 1 but no action taken. The local committee of the National Sweet Fo.T. Society-has appointed a. subcommittee, to draft a prize schedule for the next show. . A ladies' committee is being formed.
