COPPER, TIN, AND'SPELTER IN 1911. The world's total production of copper in 1911 showed only a small increase, viz., 898 400 metric tons, as against 686,900 metric tons in 1910. Larger outputs were reported from Germany, Servia, Russia, Japan, Africa, and Australia, while the United. States and Canada did not reach their usual average. It is expected that, during the current year, the States and the new Catanga mines in Africa will supply much larger quantities. With regard to tin, the total production amounted to 118,200 metric tone, or 25C0 more than in 1910. The Straits Settlement produced nearly onehalf of the whole. Of the remaining quantity, one-half was supplied by Bolivia, and one-fourth by Africa. The tin mines of Cornwall contributed only 45C0 tons, equal to about 4 per cent, of the whole production. In spelter Europe takes the lead with nearly 70 per cent, of the whole output. Of thisv four-lenitliß were of German origin, while Great Britain and France contributed each one-ten Hi. Tho total output Increased from 816,000 in 1910 to 895,400 tons in 1911. /Turning to the consumption, there were larpi increases in copper, and spelter, while tin experienced a slight reduction. The consumption of copper- increased from 904,700 tons in 1910 to 959,400 toTia in 1911; that is to sa.y, it exceeded last year's production by 61,000 tons-. Of this quantity, the United States consumed 35.8 per cent., Germany 25.1 per cent., Britain 17.7 per cent., and Franco 10.6 per cent. All other countries taken together consumed only 10.8 per cent., or only a fraction more than was consumed by Franco alone. With regard to the consumption of spelter the United States consumed 28.3 per ceut., German 24.5 per cent., and Great Britain 19.6 per cent., while 27.6 per cent, represented the proportion consumed by all other remaining countries. Tin exnerieuceil «, reduction in consumption from 121.3C0 tons in 1910, to 117,400 tons in 1911. In commenting upon this, the return says that it would seem a3 if the United States, having now sufficient tinplate works of their own to supply the demands of the canning industry, had ceased to bo good customers of* the tin-plate industry in Wales. At the same time, the cheapening of the manufacture of class bottles and jars by means of tho Owen process is gradually replacing jam tins, etc., by glass vessels.
