HUTT BOROUQH COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of the Lower 'Hutt Borough Council was held last evening, and was attended by tho Mayor (Mr. E. P. Bunny), and' Councillors Hobbs. Ball, Roots, Clendon, Hodgins, and Knight. '

Messrs. Coward and Son wroto regarding services in England for obtaining quotations in reference to purchasing and shipping.—Received.

The Hospital and Charitable Aid Board's inspector reported several cases of infectious disease in the borough. Mr. T. M. Wilford, M.P., wrote asking that, if the council approve, they would pass a resolution supporting his motion that local bodies should have the right to appoint independent Sinking Fund Commissioners.—Consideration deferred, the Mayor and Councillor Kempthorno to make inquiries.

Tho borough solicitor advised having issued a writ with respect to the Tc Nomi Land Company and others. He stated that the hearing would take place at the next sitting of the Supreme Court.—Received.

The Bank of New Zealand intimated that the overdraft limit for the district fund account had now been reduced from .£12,000 to .£7OOO in view of the lodgment to that account of the sum of .£5000.— Received. ■ ■

Two ratepayers wore granted assistance in respect to their drainage. The Hutt Park Committee asked for a further progress payment of ,£2O on account of the current year's grant.—Granted, subject to' the other councils doing tho same. "

On the motion of the Mayor, it was resolved to hold the'"Baldwin Cup" on behalf of the local fire brigade,. tho latter body having won it at tho re-cent firo brigades' competition. The borough rajiger (Mr. Mills) notified tbat he had been, threatened when carrying out his duties in connection with tho impounding of cattle. Councillor Clen-. don moved that the clerk be instructed to warn certain alleged offenders that tho council would not countenance tho interference or threats directed against the rancor whilo tho latter was executing his duties. St. James Cricket Club and the Hutt District Cricket Club were granted tho uso of tho Recreation Ground during; the season. Tho Hutt Horticultural Society were Granted permission to put up a streamer of bunting on the road on tho days of their show, September 18 and 19. Tho engineer reported that about 505 chains on the Main Road eastern drainage section No. 5 had been" laid at a total cost of .£lO7l Is. 5d., or .£123 Is. sd. in excess of the estimate. Work in. connection with tho fencing and memorial tablet in the old cemetery site vos practically finished. Ono connection had been made with the gas mains and three with the water mains. The number of water connections effected to date was 029, and 624 permits had been issued under the drainage and sanitary by-lawe. In a supplementary report tho engineer recommended that, before any further permits were issued under tho sanitary and drainage by-laws, tho assistnnt-en-pinecr should be given authority to draw up a specification of each now building for the benefit of contractors and also with a.view to effecting a marked saving in time.

The Mayor remarked that it' wns nn excellent suggestion, and ho moved Mint the recommendations be given efl'ect to, and that the engineer and town clork ho authorised to frame an amended by-law so as to embody the suggestion. This was carried,
