WANGANUI JOTTINGS.

(By Telegraph— Special Correspondent.) Wanganui, September G. A steamer load of jarrah timber for the Dublin Street bridge arrived to-day from Australia, via Wellington, but when it will be -utilised is problematical, as the deadlock between the council and the contractor still continues, with apparently no immediate prospect of settlement. The Wangamii_ Borough Council has decided to adopt its gas engineer's recommendation to ask the ratepayers to sanction a further gas loaft of .£30,0(10 for considerable extensions necessitated by the rapid growth of the business. It is proposed to Taise ,£7OOO this year, the balance being spread over the ensuing four years. Tho committee of the Wanganui Orphanago yesterday discussed tho plans for their now building with the architect, and finally adopted same. Building operations wiil probably be started within tho next few weeks. At a meeting at Wanganui East last evening it was decided to form a Ratepayers' Association, and a resolution was passed strongly disapproving of |ho proposed amalgamation with Wanganui. It is stated, however, that the meeting was by no means representative, and that tho aiiti-amalgamation resolution does not express the unanimous opinion of tho dwellers in that suburb.
