THE REVISED VERSION

IMPORTANT PROTEST. A protest, signed by the five surviring members of the Old Testameut-Revision Company (viz., Dr. W. Aldis Wright, Dr. Christian D. tiinsburg, Dr. T. K. Cheyne, Professor Sayce, and Professor Driver), nearly all the past and present Professors of Theology inftho Universities of Oxford and Cambridge, and other Biblical scholars, thirty iu number, has been made against tho issue- by tho University Presses of anedition of the Revised Version without tho marginal notes of tho revisers. -The terms of Protest aro as follows:— "We feel it our duty to protest against an ci l.ion of the li'-vised Version with out th emarginal notes of tho Revisers (brevier, lGmo.), which has recently been issued by. the University Presses. The marginal notes are au integral part of out the marginal notes Of the Revisers themselves attached high importance; and to omit'them involves a .nmtilalion of their work which docs great; injustice both to them and to (heir readers, biiico tin- publication of the complete Revised Version in ISSS we believe that not a single commentary has appeared, especially on books of the Old Testament, in which n preference for many of (ho marginal readings of tho Revised Version has not been expressed; and in view of this. »rcnt and admitted importance of the Revisers' margins it is to bo Tcprettod that the University Presses should liavo taken what appears. U> «s to be n retrograde step. By publishing, for whatever ivaBon, an editiou without these marginal notes, they are withholding from tho public a most valuable help to the understanding of the Scriptures. Wo therefore desire to impress upon all who use the Revised Version, that this mutilated edition is one which they should uniformly avoid;.and to express the earnest hope 'that tho University Presses will not. give currency to'editions ot the Hewed Version without, the marginal notes which nre an integral part of it. Meanwhile we would urge upon all teachers who use the Kevifcd Version, or prescribe it for examinations, tho importance ot taking caretbot editions containing .the marginal nobs nf the Revisers are u&ed by their jDupila."
