Doth the Blenheim and the Hawcra were placed on tho Wellington Patent Slip yesterday. The latter vessel will coino off to-day. Work, which will take a fow days, has to bo done to the Blenheim. It will bo remembered that this vessel grounded on the Wairau Bar eonie timo ago, and this has necessitated some slight repairs to her hull. The Putiki will be taken up for overhaul ncit week. Latest charters include the Canterbury Steamship Company's Petone, 70S tons. Sho is to take a cargo of timber from Wanganui to Sydney. The Jfaoriland Steamship Company's Holradalc, 267 tons, loads timber at Karamea, for Sydney. A communication which the Imperial Merchant Service Guild has received from one of its members, an officer, serving in one of a fleet of large steamers where tho conditions are considered to be superior to thoje obtaining in tie general run of cargo vessels, contains tho following:—"I am giving up tho sea altogether this voyage, as I have hopc6 of getting married eomo day, and I do not thini it worth it at sea, especially as there aro so many privileges extended to married men, and so many holidays, etc., that, as I say, am trying my Inck ashore. I find I can manage far better ashore on £2 per week, and,. at tho same time, have a home."
