The Mayor Olr. E. Goodbeherc) presided at a meeting of members of the Beautifying Society. The secretary (Mr A. E. Patterson) read a report bn the year's work, aiid the balance-sheet showed a credit of JC24B. The chairman stated that this sum had been earmarked for improvements to the South Street Reserve and tree-planting on Kihibolton Road. Officers were elected as follows:—Vicepresidents, Messrs. D. Pryde and V. f. Haggitt; committee, Messrs. J. Campbell! W. Groube, L. T. Brown, Livesey, G. Spenc*, J. G. Cobbo, and G. Fitzpatrick; secretory, Mr. A. E. Patterson. • At the poll, held at Mnkino this' week, for tho vacancy on the Poildiii" Borough Council, Mr. K. Robinson scored 112 votes against 91 cast for his opponent, Mr. W. W. Andrews.
Sinco the present Defence Act came into forco in April last year, there have been 21 summonses issued from the Feildiiig Court for alleged breaches of tho provisions of the Act. In five cases the information was withdrawn. Of the sixteen eases dealt with, fourteen resulted in convictions being entered, and two eases were dismissed on their merits.
The Itev. .1. .T. North, of Wellington, gave a lecture in tile Drill Hall, Peilding,' last evening on "The British in India." Mr. John Cobbe presided at the animal meeting of Hie Keildiug Employers' Association this week. Mr. Fred Pirani Was re-elected president and dolcgatc-.to the Wellington conference.
