Mr, Barnes, Senator Penrose, and Senator Guggenheim, and others did not know tlio meaning of Republican principles, They represented Hie crooked alliance between crooked politics and crooked busi< ness, which had boeu tho curse o£ American life. The reactionary Republicans were now tending to support Dr. Wood Tow Wilson for tho Presidency, as tho bosses were finally concluding that a, Democratic victory meant their victory.
A PROGRESSIVA VICTORY, CALIFORNIA FOR ROOSEVELT. (Rec. September 6, 0.50 a.m.) New York, September 5. San Francisco reports that the Stntt primary elections resulted in the Progressives nominating 80 out of 100 of tl'.e Republican party's candidates for the Stat* Legislature. Tho Progressives also won seven of t!» eleven Congressional districts. Tho Progressive victory insures th< nomination of Presidential electors pledgee to support Mr. Roosevelt, Tho Taft Republicans are disheartened, but the Democrats nro jubilant, feeling tho split among the Republicans is cc.r< tain to mean a Democratic win.
THE VERMONT ELECTIONS. A JAR FOR THE REPUBLICANS. New York, September 4. Tho result of the elections in tile Stat* of Vermont is admitted to bo serious for tho Republican forces. A similar result has not occurred during the past fifty-six years in which tlio Republicans have been, supremo in the Stnto Legislature and all other offices. Mr. Taft lias nothing to say regarding the result. (Rec. September 6, 0.50 a.m.) New York, September 5. The Vermont elections totals gives the voting strength as: 26,000 Regular Republicans; 20,000 Democrats; 15,000 Rooseveltiaus; and a Prohibition vote of 11,000.
