LADIES' HOCKEY

NELSON BEATS WELLINGTON. An interesting ladies' hockey match .was played at Duppa Street yesterday between a team of kelson ladies and a Wellington combination. Nelson "triumphed-bv five goals to three. To some extent tlie deplorable state of tWe turf marred the good intentions of the players. In the main, tlie play was characterised bv the continuous attacking bv both side's and this naturally made for fairly fast play. In the second spell, however, .Veflincton missed numerous opportunities for bettering their position. They, in fact, missed the ball on many occasions, and, generally speaking, took too much for granted. From the bully-off Nelson attacked, but the work of Miss Shearer (goalkeeper for Wellington) saved manv awkward positions for her side. The ball, on being centred, travelled down on Wellington territory again, and the Nelson backs attacked strongly, enabling Miss Israel to open their score, with a beautiful shot. Nelson, 1; Wellington, 0. Up-and-down play, continued foT a while, and then Miss Emms played the ball right through from half-way, and scored. Nelson, 2; AVellington, 0. Brisk play ensued, and both sides were attacking strongly.. when halftime was called.

On resuming, play continued fast. As previously mentioned, Wellington often missed the ball, and, very shoi-"y, Nelson's score.was again increased Tj'y Miss Israel, who was playing a really sood game. Nelson, AVellington, 0. AVellington now took a strong hand in matters, and the capital play of Miss Laing (left-forward) resulted in Miss M. Harris scoring AVcllington's first goal. AA'cllington, 1; Nelson, 3. The visitors attacked again in strength, and played the ball right up to' the mouth of their opponent's net. A scramble took place here, with tho result that Miss Emms shot another goal for Nelson. Nelson, 4; AVellington, 1. Play thereafter was of the up-and-down order, both teams attacking in turn. AVellington played hard, but Nelson attacked more strongjy still, and, eventually, AVellington conceded a corner, to save further trouble. From a good forward passing rush Miss Emms was again conspicuous in increasing Nelson's score. Nelson, 5; Wellington, 1. Hopeless as the match was now, AVellington again bestirred themselves, and Miss G. Harris, receiving a pass from Miss MSDonald, shot a good goal. AA 7ellington, 2; Nelson, 5. A little later a splendid piece of passing by several of tho Wellington forwards enabled Miss Dement to score. AVellington, 3; Nelson, 5. Mr. G. Davies was referee.

Miss AVorboys (left-half) played well, and Miss Laing's work was splendid. The Misses G. and M. Harris, and Dement also played very creditably. The visitors' forwards were an excellent combination, Misses Barker, Israel, Emms, and Grove playing capital games. The teams were as follow:—Nelson—Miss Harris (goalkeeper); backs, Miss AVin (left) and Miss Grove (right); halves, Miss J. Barker (left). Miss Wliitwell (centre, captain), Miss Gill (right); forwards, Miss Ingram (left), Miss Emms (left-in-side), Miss Parsonage (centre), Miss Israel (right-inside), and Miss R. Smith (rightwing).

AVellington.—Miss Shearer (goalkeeper); backs, Miss Tinney (left), and Miss Permain (right); halves, Miss Hicks (left), Miss' Warren -(centre), 1 and Miss AVorboys (right); forwards, Miss Laing (left), Miss G. Harris (left-inside, captain);' Miss Dement (centre), Miss M. Harris (right-in-side), and Miss M'Donald (right-wing). The Nelson team left, for Christchurch last, evening, where they are to take part in the New Zealand championships. The Wellington team is to leave by this evening's steamer.
