Dr. Ewart, whoj returned from Masterton last Saturday, has since then contraded pneumonia, and his condition is causing his friends some anxiety. Cricketers and many others will no doubt be interested to learn that Mr. Bort Kortlang, lato of Melbourne, has been appointed city traveller in connection with one of the business departments of The Dominion". Mr. Kortlang is one of Victoria's best-known cricketers, and as a batsman has ft splendid record for consistency against even the best of bowling. He is also a tirst-elass bowler, a good wicketkeeper, and a brilliant field. Ho should prove a tower of strength to cricket in Wellington during tiio approaching season. Mr. James Oakley Brown, one of the oldest pressmen in New Zealand, was entertained by the members of the Parliamentary press gallery yesterday on the, occasion of hi£ 6ixty-first birthday. On behalf of the members of the gallery, Mr. F. K. Reeves, the next oldest member of the- gallery, presented Mr. Browne with & token of esteem on behalf of his assooiates, Mr. Beeves referred to Mr. Browne's long «nd honoured connection with the gallery, and the fine spirit in which ho had always carried out the "best traditions of the- game. , ' Mr. Browne responded in a.few appropriate words, and his health was toasted with musical honours. Mr. IV M. Hickcy (Press -Assooiniion) mid Mr. 'Stanley Muir (chairman of the gallery) nlso paid a tribute to Mr. Browne's worth. Mr, James Shanahau, Inspector of tho Labour Department in Auckland, has been granted three months' leave of absenco from the end of September, and ho will subsequently Tetire uuder superannuation. Mr. Shanahan has conducted tho affairs of his Department with conspicuous ability, and his obliging nature has made him a popular official. Mr. D. Carmody, Inspector of Awards, has been promoted to be Inspector of Factories in Wellington.
Mr. Frank Willis, of Hamilton, hns gone to Auckland to take the position of distriet manager for the Auckland provincial district for the Norwich Union Life Insurance. His departure from Hamilton will be greatly regretted by nil lovers of music, as he held (ho position of leader of tho local Orchestral Society for the Inst two years.—Auckland "Herald." Messrs. Arthur Grabham and G. S. Maben, of Wellington, and P. Sampson, of Christchnrch, who are interested in a patent electric dimmer, left for England on Friday last. Mr. William Finlay, of Clyde Quay, now in England, is said to be poorly in health. Mr. Barry Coney, the Auckland baritone, who is to sing at Mr. Horace Hunt , s recital in the Town Hall to-morrow evening, arrived in Wellington by yesterday's Main Trunk express
Reporting yesterday on the petition of Wm. Blake, Petone, for compensation for toss of employment in the railway service, the Railways Committee made no recommendation, to the House of Representatives.
A pleasant function was held last evening to/say farewell to Mr. Arthur Curtaync, 'of the State Guaranteed Advances Department, who is joining a, legal firm in Wairoa, Hawke's Bay. The function was organised by the Victoria College Football Club, of which Mr. Curtayne hns been a prominent member for soino years. Mr. I. Davey, club captain, on behalf of tho V.C. Football Club, presented Mr. Curtayne with a set of pipes arid.wished him every success in his future- career. Dr. Izard (president of the Boxing Association), Mr. E. Hales (chairman of tho Wellington Rugby Union), and Mr. A. Marryat (president of tho W.A.A. Association) made reference to Mr. Curtayne's good qualities and tho loss his 'departure meant to sports bodies generally. Mr. Curtayno suitably replied.
Mr. W. J. Osborn, who has been connected for many years --with Messrs. A. Cowan and Co., Wellington, has acquired an interest in the old-established business, printing and stationery, carried on bv Messrs. Ferguson and Hicks. Friends of Mr. E. Hicks will regret to hear that ill-health necessitates his retirement from business.
