An "At Home." On Tuesday afternoon an "At Home" was given by .Mrs.. K. I'ocke and Miss Fqcke at their home on the Terrace for Miss Eileen Elundell, who is shortly leaving New Zealand. The rooms hail been charmingly decorated with masses of fruit blossoms (cherry in the drnwing-ruom and plum in the dining-room), Hie teatables in addition, being adorned with .tho time-worn symbols of good luck—silver horso-shoes, a silver boot. etc. Songs were sung by Miss Dall, Miss Anderson, Miss \N. Haybittle, and Miss Uliimlell, and si fortune-teller, stationed in another room, read the fiilure to curious inquirers. Mrs. Focko wore a 501111 of black ninon and lace, and Hiss Fockc was in a white lace frock- with touches of mauve. Miss liileen Bhindoll wore a very pretty frock of palest pink voile bordered with floral bands, and a champagne-coloured hat massed with shaded pink hyacinth. Among those present were: Mrs. K. Blumkll, Mrs. C. Tringkum, Mrs. Noel Nelson, Mrs. T«inant, tho Misses D'Oylv (2), Cleghorn, D. "Wilson, Nelson, Sliirtcliffc (2), Russell, Wylie, Jameson, Marchant (2), Hay"bittlo (2), Anderson, Dall, Macintosh (2), Wilberfoss, Chilman, 0. Kcmbei-j M'Kellar, Fnulke, Q. Johnston, Getldis, Hayward, Litchfield, and others.
Resolutions by W.C.T.U. Convention. Our Masterton correspondent- states that, at the Wellington District Convention of the W.C.T.U., held at Masterton yesterday, tho following resolution was carried: "We, tho members of tho W.C.T.U., in convention assembled, protest strongly against any legislation increasing the number of totalisator permits. In view of tho. fact that tho great evil of gambling among our men, women, and youths is so fostered by this Statelicensed betting machine, we earnestly urge tho Government to submit the question of it's retention or abolition to a referendum of the people."
A resolution was also passed pledging the tinion to vote only for Parliamentary candidates opposed to the three-fifths majority on tho licensing question.
A Children's Party. Yesterday afternoon a -most enjoyable children's fancy dress party, of which Miss Ethna Greig was the small hostess, was given at the residence of Mrs. Greig, in . Upton .- Terrace. Dancing, games, gramaphono selections, recitations, and competitions greatly entertained the guests, who entered into everything with tho ■ greatest of vigour. A great many oj! the ohildren who took . part in the "Boy Bluo and 80-Peep" set of lancers at tho, recent Kindergarten ball were to be seen, wearing their pretty fancy dress, also some of the Quakers.and Dutch chilr dren. Dainty little girls in "powder and patches" wero present,'and all'the other gay little figures that are to be seen at such events. The email hostess herself, as well as her /smaller sister, was a "BoPeep." A large room had been set aside for tho children's game?, and two others for supper, the tables having been prettily decorated with spring flowers and with pink ribbons carried from the chandeliers to the corners. Mrs. Greig wore a,soft black dress, and her mother, Mrs. Archibald, was also in black .
Mrs. Mossey, the wife of the Prime Minister, and Miss Ma?.sey,- intend leaving for Auckland on Saturday.-
■Miss Ethel Carey, who has been, spend; ing some time with Mrs,. Dyniock, retiirns to Masterton to-day.
Miss Gertrude Hunt returned to 'Wellington yesterday afternoon and will bo remaining in this city.
The engagement has been announced of Miss Theta Poynter, formerly of Wellington, but now of Pretoria, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Poynter, of'Bltham, to Mr. James M. Baker, Pretoria Soutti Africa.
The annual social of the Australasian Institute of Marine Engineers is to take place in the institute- rooms 011 Friday evening, September C.
Mrs. John Martin (Puruatanga) hns been spending a few days in Wellington and returns to her home to-day.
