ITS CONTROL,
iWAEM TIME'.BEEOE-E THE BENCH,
• At the-.quarterly,meeting of thei 'Wellington Licensing Committee, which was held yesterday, Police-Inspector Ellison -stated that he wished to refer, to a matto'which he had brought under the notico of the chairman of the committee (Dr.;Si'Arthur, S.M.) a few days ago.; At 'tli'e "previous sitting of the committee, ■Samuel William Moir, the licensee of-the Clyde Quay Hotel, had been granted leave of absence from his hotel, in order ■that'he might proceed to Sydney, but it <had, come to,- his-(lnspector ■ Ellison's) .knowledge that"the licensee had not left Wellington at-all. Instead of that he had been figuring in the Divorce Court. .Moreover, he had been indulging in liquor.- to excess, and if he remained as the 'licensee of the ' hotel he (tho inspector) would oppose the renewal.of the license. -Inspector'Ellison went ou to say that he 'had also been informed that the licensee had,-in fact/ bestraddicted to drink for some-time.-.ln'addition,"" there was the "circumstance'that the permit .which 'Moir .had:.obtained had not been used for the purpose stated in the application. .When the" previous licensee had been in the 'hotel the connection of a certain wonian, who then held a lien of £500. over the b'usi'ness/with the establishment had been 'objected to, and the present licensee had been granted. the license, on the under•>taflding' that .the, woman should be re.htpvedr;. It'was a coincidence that the wife of the present licensee was a .sister of the woman: who had been objected to. "Seemingly," said the inspector, a little later : on, "someone has not been quite honest-in .their representations. Ido not think that the committee or iiyself have been fairly dealt with."
-Mr.-Albert Wylie; who appeared for the owner of the hotel"'(Hamilton Gilmer), said that Gilmer had no knowledge of anyone but the licensee being /'nterested in'the hotel. Gilmer was now anxious to'have the license -transferred. The position-'was a most unfortunate ori». & M'Arthur: The committee arc absolutely - determined that that man Jloir shall'not go back at all.. Marshals time for holding, the license f or Mm expires" on the Bth. We are not-going: to have'Moir back./ This is not only m the interests of the community, but, also ill the interest of the honest licensees", themselves.' He can't go 'back' th'.ie! . ; ; Arrangements will uayc to be made before: the >Bth. ■.: The committee, vilralways have to. be very careful who fees into .that-hotel. - "We have been sadly treated. "We have been taken'iu -.un all hands-in' ,the first' instance, anil irf'.the second instance, and we are not going to be taken in a third time. . ' • ■••. Mr.-Wylie.: I will impress it on him-r— •Dr. M'Arthnr.:.You will have to sifon him, and make him-do it.' .Otherwise he will find the place closed. There will be no extension after the Bth, unless some satisfactorj-.'arrangements are made. Dr. M'Arthur.. said that a member of the"'. committee wanted to know whether or not Mr. Wylie was satisfied that Moir was a "dummy." ,-■■ Mh Wylie:' W;hether.'he' was a dummy for other people 1 or not T could not say. Pa'm'satisfied that'he was ; not as far as Mr,;' Gilmer- is. concerned.* .< ■ :
