U.S. COMMISSION REPLIES TO ! CRITICISM.' ' ' By Telccraph—Press Aosociation-Conyrirtl (Rec. September 1, 5.5 p.m.) New York, August .11. Mr. Sullivan, Iho United States Commissioner at the Olympic Games, has published a statement replying to the charges made by certain English newspapers against the American athletes' practices. Ho declares that the charges are lies, and are insulting to every member of tho American team. The charges made against the Americans were, briefly, as follows:—That American athletes in general and American university athletes are. simply specialists in sport, and that the latter pay little heed to their studies; and that Americans go in for sport with the sole idea of winning.
