Speaking at Columbus, Ohio, President ,Taft explained tho exercise of his veto power. His friends had told him that if any king had acted as ho (Mr. Taft) did, his head would drop into the basket. Mr. Taft had retorted that he must act according to his conscience, even if his head did fall into tho basket. Tho trouble with tho present-day reformer was that he wanted reforms put into, force overnight, and have them ready by breakfasttime next morning. .THE PROGRESSIVE PLATFORM. . (Rec. September 1, 5.5. p.m.) New York, August 81. 'At a conference, of Progressives at Vermont Mr. Roosevelt pledged himself in favour of granting votes for women. Many women participated in the \ Conference. One of them/ Jane Adams, .nominated Mr. Roosevelt. Other planks in tho .progressive platform are one day's rest in seven for all wage-earners, an eight-hour day for women, measures to ■ prevent industrial accidents, and to encourago rural development.
