PARTICULARS OF THE OCTOBEB' GATHERING. The secretary of the Manawatu A. and P. Association lias been advised that his Excellency the Governor will officially open tho association's .spring show on October .30. The gathering will continue over October 31 and November 1. A number of new classes have been inserted in this year's .schedule, and the dog, art needlework, and home industries divisions have-been remodelled. 11l the competitions, new classes are inserted for horse-shoe making, wool classing, skirting, and rolling, best lady rider (astride), best lady rider (sidesaddle), qualified hunters'' competition, sheep shearing (open and students). Master IV. A. Coombs has donated a challenge cup (value 20 guineas) for champion draught sire or colt, and the Union Company's challenge cup (50 guineas) for champion Clydesdale mare is scheduled. i The cattle divisions are all provided with trophies. In the lead come Shorthorns, .with two special prizes of £5 ss. each for champion bull and champion cow, donated by Mr. W. T. Williams, of To Aute. Ilcrefords follow, and competition should bo greatly stimulated l\v the insertion of the Hereford Herd Book Society's (England) challenge cup. Mr. G. i\ Moore donated a five-guinea trophy, and a private donor a similar amount in the samo division. In respect to Jerseys, Holsteins, and Ayrshires Messrs. Millar and Giorgi have donated a challenge trophy (a gold watch, value 20 guineas) for tho exhibitor scoring the most points in any ono .of tho tlireo divisions. Tills is something quite new, and should prove a great incentive to exhibitors. For the Jersey division, Mr. S. li. Lancaster donated a most points trophy of <£5 55., au( l Mr. H, B. Tucker acted in a similar fashion for tho Ayrshires. Messrs. Slack Brcs. again contributed their special of .£3 in tho samo class. In the Holstein division Mr. \V. I. Lovelock donated a £2 2s. special. Messrs. Watchorn's 20-guinea cup has been allotted to the class for the best grade dairy cow scheduled. Messrs. A. Palmer and Co. also donate a ,E3 3s. special. In tho fat cattle class Messrs. Barraud and Abraham, Ltd., have replaced the tro-phy won outright last year by Mr. G. F. Moore, and the New Zealand Hereford Breeders donated another pieeo of plate, value 5 guineas. The various sheep divisions lost several trophies last year by being won outright, but new ones have been donated. Tho Lister Lincoln Cup, won by Mr. Perry, of Masterton, last November, is replaced by ft shield from tho same company. The Quibell Cup, also won by Mr. Perry, is replaced by the M'Dougall Cup, presented through the agents (N.Z.L. and M.A. Co.). The Shropshire Down division is this year provided with a new cup, donated by Messrs. Walker and Hall. In Southdowns the Highland Dip and Southdown Society's (England) cups are still running, as is tho Short Cup in the Romney division. A handsome Wheeler memorial perpetual challenge shield is given by the New Zealand Ifomtiey Breeders' Association for the ' champion Romney ram over 21 months. The present will bo the first time this trophy has been competed for. " . rig's liavo had attention, and under certain conditions medals are given. This is encouragement to pig breeders, and sho.uld iudueo more competition than has. been the case in recent years. Tho dog division has been remodelled and specials are numerous. Two notable ones are ss. challenge trophies, donated bv Messrs. O'Connor and Tydeman ■(for Irish terrier?) and N. D. Stubbs (fov wire-haired fox terriers). Tho art and fancy needlowork division is also recast, and Messrs. Collinson and Canninghatno's trophy, au F. and R. sewing machine, value X 9, for most points (3 times), is scheduled. This.also is a now departure in the division. There is no material alteration ■in the school divisions, but homo industries have been overhauled. •' Something fresh at the end of the list is tho hemp competition, for which Mr. Scifert donates a special prize of £3 3s. The schedule has never been better provided for in tho way. of special prizes, and those mentioned do not by any means comprise the total promises to date. Tho present dairying season is likely to prove one of tho most successful ever experienced in the Dominion. But, however favourable conditions may be the farmer whose plant is unreliable or obsolete will bo lucky if he pulls through without loss.
