A presentation of a gold bangle was made yesterday to Mrs. Mellish, a member of tho staff of the Campbell Street School, who is now retiring from the profession, after over thirty, years. of service. At tho Court to-day Thomas Trow was fined. 20s. and costs for not keeping two bulldogs under proper' control. It appeared from tho evidenco that tho animals attacked' a resident, inflicting wounds and tearing his clothes. 'A Maori tohuliga named. Hingawaka Tii'paroa was brought up to-day on six charges of supplying liquor to a Maori pa. Ho was convicted, and fined to tho total amount of .£2l 19s. Tho Presbyterian Missioner to tho Chinese (Rev. A. Don, of Dunedin) has been here for some days, visiting local Chinese. Mr. Don found that there were seventy-six Chinese engaged in various occupations, tho largest number being market 'gardeners, and the remainder mostly "iotiks and laundrymen; ir . Tho College School Committee held its usual meeting last evening, i»Jien tho headmaster reported tho roll number fur tho past year was 551, with an average attendanco of 470. The second term examination was being conducted, and tit .its conclusion tho school, would break up for a week. A considerable sum had been promised towards tho . purchase cf the section for enlarging the playground,between £10-and «£SO of tlio amount being in hand. Mrs.. Mellish, of the. Campbell Street School, has been appointed chaperonoof tho Manawatu ladies hockey team which' has Ikoii selected to take part in the tournament at Christcliurch.
The Pnimerston Orchestral Society will hold its next concert on September 24.
