The first sitting of the Magistrite's Court was held in the new Courthouse today, when Mr. Eeid, S.M., was congratulated by the Bar upon the steps which ho had taken to secure tho opening of tho building for tho transaction of public business. An action for alleged libel has teen commenced ill tho Supremo Court at Masterton by Taiawhio To Tau against Father Delach, for alleged statements published in "Whare Ivura," a Maori newspaper. The case is one of considerable interest, and will bo heard at tho next sittings of the, Supreme Court. At Knox Church yesterday, afternoon George D. Ayson, of Lower Hutt, son of Mr. L. Ayson, Chief Inspector of Fisheries for Keiv Zealand, was married to Miss Olive Graham Wackay, daughter of Mr. J. G. Mackay, of Kuripuni. Tho service was performed by the Rev. A. T. Thompson, 8.A., B.D. Commissioner Cullen and Inspector Ellison wero on an official visit to Mastertoil to-day. . The Wairarana Caledonian Society lield a successful "inglesido" in tho Town Hall annual "social" in connection with the Excelsior Hockey Club was held tonight, and proved a most enjoyable function. Masterton, August 30. At tho last meeting of tho Masterton branch of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants a resolution was passed upholding tho action of the Government in imuorting an eipert to manage tho New Zealand Railways. Two bankruptcies have been registered in Masterton durin gtho month of -August, making eight for the year as against twelve for the 6ama period last year. A School of Agriculture for teachers ooens here on Monday, and will be continued for a fortnight. A laree number of visiting teachers are expected. At a meeting of the Overseas Club tonight arrangements were made for the reception of his Excellency, Lord Islington, at tho official opening of the club next month. Mr. J. H. Pauling, a well-known citizen of Masterton, is at present in tho hosnital seriously ill. Dr. Ewart, of Wellington. was summoned for consultation this afternoon.
