THE LATE MR. T. G. MACARTHY.

MEMORIAL SUGGESTED. "Citizen" writes as follows:—"Is nothing to bo dono to commemorate the memory of tlio lat© Mr. T. G. Macarthy? It is true, perhaps, that this gentleman was no public man in the ordinary interpretation of the word, but lie was ono who did a great deal of good by stealth, and by many in this city is mourned most genuinely. His final act was a truly great one. Wellington has not yet realised the wonder and magnificence of the benefaction he has willed to the city and province for ever. Although the valuo of tho deceased gentleman's estate has been set down for probate purposes at half a million sterling, the actual amount will be nearer .£800,(100, and may even be X 900.000. But taking one-half of the residue at a quarter of a million sterling (tho interest on which is to benefit charities and educational institutions in tho province), it is easily conceivable that from .£'15,000 to .£20,000 will be made available for distribution annually in a manner to bo determined by CTie board which is to administer tho Macarthy Trust. Mr. Macarthy has by this ono act made Wellington a debtor to his memory for ever, as the valuo of the estate, if carefully ndmihistered, will grow every year, and by tho time our children have arrived at maturity, the amount to be disbursed yearly will be enormous. When (hat time arrives will they not question the sense of gratitude possessed by their parents in not Honouring Wellington's greatest benefactor 111 somo tangible way. Whether the memorial bo in the form of a monument, a statue, or bas reliefs to bo placed in the hospital nud University matters little, but what matters, and should bo of concern to all well-wishers of Wellington and its good name, is that something should be done, and that quickly."
