THE SYDNEY-AUCKLAND SERVICE., Mr. Arthur Millward, manager for tho Pacific Cable Board, is at present in Wellington on business connected with thfl Sydney-Auckland direct cablo service. As lias previously been stated, a direct cable lino is being laid from Sydney to Auckland to provide a quicker service than is at present possible via the SydneyNorfolk Island-ftoubtlcss Bay line, aho shore end of the new cable comes out on the AVest Coast, near Onohunga, ami (hence is conductcd underground to tlio Auckland Post Office, where tho cablo stolT will be located. Interviewed yesterday by a representative of The Dominion. Mr. Millward said that the new line would be ready for service bv December next, and would bo found to be a very great improvement on the existinc service. "Wo ore also e.xtendniq the cable from Doubtless Bav to Auckland," added Mr. Millward, "and bringing Hie staff with it thus dispensinu with the Doubtless Bav Station altogether. With these two lines the Sydney-Auckland service will lw dm plicated.'' In reply to a question in reference to the recent cabled announcement with rosard to tho proposed purchase of ono of the Atlantic cables, Mr. Millward said that ho was unable to give any information on that point.
