LADIES' GOLF.
THE CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING. IBt TolcErai)h.-I'ress Association.! Nolson, August 29. The eighteenth ladies' golf enampiouship tournament of New Zealand, hold under the auspices of tho Ladies' Golf Union, opened on .Tahunauui links this morning. The entries received were not so large as at the last championship meeting in Wellington, but those who have entered include tho best players. Ainong.st the most prominent competitors are Miss L. Brandon (present champion , of New Zealand and runner-up to Mrs. Beynn three years ago) and Mrs. Guy Williams, probably tho most experienced player competing, and ono whose goif , career extends over fourteen years, iu which she has had various wins to her credit. Other names- well known in the New Zealand golfing world are:—Miss Snodgrass, champion of tho West Coast, Miss Gould last year's runner-up,, Mrs. Slack runner-up in 1910, Miss E. Ledger champion of tho Nelson Club for the f.ast three years, Miss Gorrio Auckland and Napier champion, and Miss Pearai, who was defeated in tho semi-final last year, but who has recorded some- rather "phenomenal scores in AVellington this year. It is considered that Miss Brandon' will have hard fights if she is to return the championship title. v The prevailing opinion seems to bo that tho links aro situated on ideal go] in it; country. Tho local Ladies Committee have arrangements well forward regarding the local management of the gathering, and tho convenience of visiting players, , The opening event was the first round of the championship, which, commenced in weather ideal for golf, although uncomfortable perhaps for tho players. The "Scotch mist," which then prevailed, developed into heavier rain later on; and was probably the cause of the comparatively high scoring in tho handicap match. In the first round of the championship, and, 6avo for that between Miss Theomin. and Miss Anderson, the matches were won by comfortable margins. A senior and junior stroke handicap was played in the afternoon, and a largo number of contestants went out. None of tho' cards handed in contained astonishing- performancps; three 94's being tho lowest. Miss Sybil Abraham came first in the ; eenior event, and- Miss Richmond first in the junior. Tho result of the competitions to date are as follow: — CHAMPIONSHIP. Miss Gould beat Mrs. Moclaine, 7 up and G to play. Mr?. Slack beat Miss J. Mill, 5 up and 3 to piny. Miss Theomin beat Miss P.
