RUGBY FIASCO. NO APPEARANCE AT A MATCH. DOES TOURING "PAY"? The Nelson' Rugby football touring team was to have met tho Wellington ! .Wednesday representatives on tho Athletic Park yesterday afternoon, but word was received at tho Park at 3 o'clock that tho Nelson team were not going to play. Inquiries were made, and the secretary of the Wellington .Rugby Union stated that tho team had left by the 1 p.m. boat for Nelson, The whole trouble seems to hare orifriiiatc<l over tho question of ,n "gate." The kelson representatives have beeu touring the North Island lor some few days past, and as far as "gates" were concerned, they were far from successful in obtaining very much. Their "gates" at some of the towns which they visited amounted to something liko £2, £3, aiid-JM. Their financial position on arrival at Wellington was a very poor one. Tho managers of the team communicated by teltpfiono with (.he secretary of the Wellington Union as to what tho prospects of a "gate" would be at yesterday's match. On being informed of tho small "prospects," he decided that it was not worth while staying to play, and consequently the team caught tho boat for Nelson yester■'i'he movements of the team during their tour were not known by the Wellington Union, and it was only by chance that ono of the Eugby .Union officials happened to meet tho manager in tho street, and he was informed that the team had arrived in Wellington, and were staying at Barrett's Hotel. •. It is stated by Eugby Union officials that if tho team had informed the Wellington Union of its movements, theso would have been recognised. WELLINGTON" CONTROL. WEDNESDAY ASSOCIATION. SIX-A-SIDE TOURNEY. The Wellington Wednesday Hookey Association held its annual sii-a-side tournament at Karori Park yestorday afternoon. Both the weather and the grounds were excellent. The two lest games were Hui Mai v. Karori A, and Em Mai B v. Petone, and both had to play out extra time. The surprise win ot the day was that of Hereawa over Hui Mai A, defeating them by 5 goals to nil. Messrs. C. P. Miienzie and J. C. Cusack acted as referees. The following are the results:— Pakeha B v. Hereawa. Hereawa won by default. Hui Mai A v. Karori A. In the first spell Bay scored for Hui Mai, while M. Spiers scored for ICarori. At the call of fimo scores were equal, and an extra five minutes had to be played. Hoy scored for Hui Mai. Hui Mai, 2; Karori, 1. Karori B v. Pakeha A. No score was notched in the first spell.
