A well-attend:.', ....eting'-of the Wellingr ton Zoologioal Society was held,last evening at Mr. Castle's room, Riddiford Street, the Rev.-J. Crowes (president) in tho chair. The resignation of. one member was accepted with regret. Mr. James Pollock was unanimously elected to fill the vacancy on the council. An interesting letter from Mr. Minchin (director of tho Adelaide Zoo) in reply to tho secretary's letter re obtaining some flamingoes, was read, and the secretary authorised to thank Mr. Minchin, and purchase a. pair of flamingoes on the conditions submitted. Mr. Castle read extracts from tho re- ■ port of the\Wanganui Scenery Preservation and Beautifying Society. It was resolved to thank the secretary of that socictv, and a committee, consisting of the Rev. J. Crewes, Messrs; B. H. Low, J. Castle, W. Janscn, R. Brown, and S. H. Underwood (with power to add), was appointed to draw up a programme, with a special reference to tree-planting and beautification of tho grounds in the Zoo ,and its vicinity. . A very interesting discussion on the proposal to charge for admission to tho Zoo took place, and a committee, consisting of the Rov. J. Crowes and Messrs. Castle, Parkinson, and tho secretary was appointed as a deputation to wait on the Primo Minister to arrange for ovidence. to be given before the Committee to whioh tho Bill re cilv reserves has been referred. The Zoological Society strongly favour free admission to the Zoo, and has a definite policy as to how the Zoo should bo maintained." ~ ~..,', A discussion regarding Kapiti Island as n sanctuary for New Zealand fauna resulted in a suggestion that the Government should, as soon as liracticable,- purchase that part of the island now owned by tho Natives, and hire tho wholo island for the protfetion of, the involnnblo birds, etc., for tlu preservation of which such a sanctuary' should bo provided. Messrs. T. J. Caterer, H. Sexton, and A. Crosby were elected members for tho ensuing year. - The secretaiv was instructed to writo a letter thanking Mr. T. H. Stevens for his gift of shrubs for the Zoo.
