GOLD MEDALS FOR A TUG'S CREW, (By. i Telctfraph.-ProEs -Association.) Gisborno, August 27. It will bo remembered. that upon. th< night tho ill-fated Star of Canada won* ashore the little tug Hipi put out in thd teeth of a hurricane-liko gale, and run' mng the gauntlet of tremendous seas, which threatened momentarily to swamp her, succeeded in getting close enough ta tho stricken liner to lcaru that tho crcW were m no immediate danger, and to obtain accurate information as to the nature of tho mishap so that in tho morning, the sea having abated considerably, it was possiblo to immediately place tho Tjiser Company's officials on board with a view to salvage. A. sequel to tho littlo vessels gallant trip occurred to-night, when at a pleasing little function in tho Council Chambers the Mayor, on behalf of tho public of Gisborne, presented each member of tha Hipi's crow with a suit-ably-inscribed gold medal as recognition of a gallant act, and as a memoir of an adventurous voyage. Tho HJipi's crew on tho night referred to was as follows:— Captain Palmer, A. P. Long (engineer), A. Houghton (fireman), J. Olive, W. Fitzmaui ice, T. Maunsell, and .E. Warrea (crew), who all received medals. Captain Gumming (harbour-master) and a representative of the Gisborno "Times" wcro also on board. Tho occasion was also taken advantage" of to present to Mr. W. H. Douglas the bronze modal awarded by the Royal Humane Society for his plucky attempt to save tho boy Gordon Brown from drowning on April 11.
