Harkness, secretary of tho National Dairy Association, arrived at Auckland from Vancouver bv the Marania yesterday morning. Ho will not return to Wellington until tlw end of the week. Mr. J. Ball, editor of tho "Wnngamri Chronicle," is a visitor to Wellington. Mr. A. M'Keowen, of Pihania (announces tho "Hawera Star") will stand for the Egmont scat as a caudfdate in the Liberal interest. There are now three candidates in tho field, Messrs, Wilkinson (Government), and Astbury and M'Kcown (Opposition). Jlr. D. Loader, of tho Mastcrton Post Office staff, who has been transferred to Napier, was last night given a scud-off by his late fellow officials and others. The Mayor of Mount Eden (Mr. 0. Nicholson) is a visitor to Wellington. Mr. James Hawkins, of tho firm of Hawkins and Smith, New Plymouth, is at present a visitor to Wellington, and is staying at the Hotel Cecil. Mr. T. Lewis Swalko, editor of tho Croatian (Austrian) newspaper "Sloga" (Concord), published in Auckland, is at present on a visit to Wellington, and is staying at the Hotel Cecil. Dr. T. Hope Lewis, of Auckland, is a visitor to Wellington. A pleasant function took place at tho Auckland police barracks on Saturday night, when Sub-Inspector Marsack was the recipient of a presentation on the occasion of Ms promotion from tho rank of c'hief-detectivo and his transfer to Palhierston North. Tho presentation, which took the form of a handsome shield with Hie photographs of all the detectives of the Auckland district, was made by ChiefDetective M'Mahon, on bphalf of the detective force.'ln making the presentation, Mr. M'Mahon referred to tho cordial relations that had existed lictweeu the staff and Mr. Marsack. He congratulated him on his promotion, and hoped it was a forerunner to further high honours. Mr. Marsack, in thanking the donors of tho presentation, said ho would always look back with very pleasant feelings to his stay in Auckland, whicli had been (ho happiest in his career, lie also thanked them for their co-operation, which had greatly assisted him. Tho Rev. Canon Mac Murray, vicar of St. Mary's Anglican Cathedral, Auckland, who has been suffering for some time from an injury to ono knee, has left for Rotorua, and will bo absent from Auckland for a month. Dr. Edmonds, of London, arrived in Auckland by tho Maheno on Monday. Ho intends to tour tho Dominion. Tho death occurred at Greymouth on Thursday last of Mr. Thomas Scott Cairney, an old and much esteemed resident cf tho district. Tho deceased sorved his apprenticeship in tho shipbuilding yards at Uroeuock, Scotland, and como out to Dunedin when 24 years of age. He served in the foundry of Messrs. M'Queon (his uncle) and Kincare, iu that city, and subsequently was for ten years foreman boiler-maker in Messrs. Mills and Cable's foundry in Wellington. Twenty-six years ago ho accepted a similar position in tho Dispatch Foundry at Greymouth, where ho remained for fifteen years. Ho was afterwards in tho Government employ at Christchureh and Greymouth, When in Scotland ho was precentor for tlio Grooliock Presbyterian Church, and his musical capacity led to the formation of Cairney's Hand iu Greymouth. He leaves a grownup family of two daughters and tlvrco eons. Mr. J. B. Clarkson, managing director of J. B. Clarkson and Co., Ltd., of Wellington and Chrisichurcli, will 1» leaving Auckland by the s.s. Marania, sailing September 27, on a trip to America, England, and the Continent. He will be present at the Olympia motor-car, motorcycle, and cyclo shows in London in November, and the 1 New York automobile and motor-cyclo shows in January.
